Women are often motivated by a desire to improve their communities. They tend to give more frequently and are more likely to make long-term charitable commitments. They also frequently include their children in philanthropic decision making, creating a sustainable pipeline of support. Pride Month is right around the corner, and straight-led organizations flock to the closest queer person or nonprofit to put on an event to attract LGBTQIA+ people to their cause. ??♀? While the intentions are good, most of these organizations don’t even have queer people on their board, or collect LGBTQIA+ data, or even know where to find them…. And that’s ok! Many nonprofits are focused on improving the lives of women, children, and other underserved groups. For me, this highlights the critical need for women to be present at the decision-making table. Equally, having a board that includes individuals from the communities the organization serves can be a powerful force for change. I work with nonprofits of all shapes and sizes, and I truly believe we should concentrate on fostering collaboration and inclusivity to drive real progress.
