Is this a sign that institutional investors are crossing the chasm to embrace digital asset natively? We often hear how institutions are tiptoeing carefully when it comes to crypto. They tend to stay away from crypto native activities such as restaking and points farming due to regulation, reputation as well as technology risks. 1?? Therefore it is quite a surprise when I read Nomura's digital asset arm, Laser Digital, is partnering with Kelp DAO, a crypto native project, to introducing Ether restaking, which is a big narrative but has yet to go live, to its digital funds. It wasn't long ago that players such as Figment and Kiln were introducing staking as a product for their more forward-leaning clients. Both now control about $1.5billion in staked assets. Restaking is a recent phenomenon, it is a way to programmatically rehypothecate the collateral for multiple purposes in a reach for extra return. 3?? The risks associated with such an activity is unclear given the lack of historical data. However, if the news is true, it represents the first institutional player from a traditional finance background is entering the world of digital asset natively. I am confident that institutional players will participate natively in the digital asset ecosystem, but that is not before: - Ether ETF gets approved - Restaking demonstrates a track record of success - Regulation catches up When the fundamental technology goes live in the form of Eigen Layer's mainnet launch, it would be interesting to see how an institutional player navigate its position around new and emergent risks. This burgeoning recognition underscores the substantial value being attributed to these products and their issuers. ??However, it is essential to approach the crypto market with caution. The realm of cryptocurrency often resembles a herd phenomenon, susceptible to rapid shifts in sentiment and speculative trends.
