Brian Raines thoughtfully explains the continuing challenges faced by those of us who come to the profession from atypical circumstances. He also exemplifies the life-changing power of higher education. As we continue to grapple with the many challenges facing higher ed, it is essential to stay focused on stories like Brian's. I often wonder what the world would be like had we not spent most of human history excluding people from education and limiting their potential based on accidents of birth. While we will never know what we could have created, it is clear to me that destroying a system that in a very short time has created incredible intellectual capital, improved the human condition immensely, and overall made our world a better place is foolish. Yes, higher ed needs to be made better. We need to prioritize student success and support, we need to embrace meaningful intellectual diversity, we need to be better citizens of the spaces we occupy. However, there is no scenario in which those shortcomings warrant the wholesale destruction of the best system of education the world has ever known. Many of us on the inside know this and are fighting to protect one of our country's most valuable assets. Those of you on the outside need to join us in the fight. The world's most creative and successful economy was built on the foundation created by higher education. Destroy the foundation and the structure will crumble.

Recognizing the power of place, acknowledging the power the place, tapping into the power the place, and learning to see and listen to the stories to be discovered in the places we live, work, and travel is fundamental to CSCR's mission. Engaging students in authenic civic and scientific issues prominent in the local community is not only a process that prepares students to be stewards of community resources, it informs all of us about our shared principles and values; it enables us to collectively advance the Common Good. This shared objective, grounded in our Constitution, is equally present in the vision statement of Cohasset Public Schools: "empowering students to improve communities." https://conta.cc/4f6mjOB

Doug Roberts, Founder and CEO of the Institute for Education Innovation, spoke with WICC radio’s Melissa in the Morning this week to give listeners a better understanding of superintendents’ role in preventing such attacks. https://lnkd.in/eYh5e-Mn ? The first approach #education #leaders take is prevention. “These are things we fight hard against as leaders, and we do so by building cultures in our districts where people feel included and welcomed and supported,” he says. ? The second is more social-emotional #SEL awareness and funding thanks to initiatives at the federal, state, and local levels. “We were able to build up stronger networks for mental health supports,” Doug says. “If a student feels that they are subject to any sort of anti-Semitic attack, we have to make sure we are checking in with kids." ? Third, Doug emphasized that when incidents happen, they need to be teachable moments for the children responsible. Schools can have strong policies against hatred but at the same time attempt to understand why the students acted as they did and address the root causes through education and building better understanding. ? ? In early May, the leaders of some of the largest U.S. public school districts testified before Congress about steps they are taking to address anti-Semitism, and Doug urged Congress to take action too, such as re-upping mental health funding for schools. “Superintendents who went to D.C. made a strong showing for our profession,” he says. “We literally stay up at night thinking about how we can make sure every student in our schools feels safe.” ? #ThoughtLeadership #Schools #Inclusion #Respect #TeachableMoments #MentalHealth #Wellbeing

In the spirit of our school's commitment to empowering students for success, I'd like to commend our Executive Director, Dr. Stauffer, for his article highlighting the importance of partnerships in preparing our high school students for the future. The article captures the collaborative efforts between various educational partners, including local businesses, educators, counselors, administrators, and industry representatives, to ensure that no student is left behind in their pursuit of valuable skills and opportunities. Lack of recognition, confusion about promotion criteria or complete lack of career pathways - this makes teaching-focused staff feel undervalued and worth less than colleagues on T&R contracts. Let's explore what can be done to change this culture.

Thank you for doing this, Herzog Foundation! There are profound theological and pedagogical reasons to at least be asking these questions. Sure, it blows up much of the way we think about traditional school. But in general, doesn't the assumptions that come from starting with the gospel as our first premise also blow up a lot of assumptions! There's enough data out there about the pedagogical effects on students and their capacities; it provides more time for teachers to prep and to stay sharp throughout the week; it creates more space for recognizing the importance of the family; (if Monday is the day "off,") it encourages greater participation in and enjoyment of our corporate worship.
