Over the past few months, Plant Construction Company, LP, Perkins&Will, Holmes US, Page & Turnbull, Bigge Crane and Rigging Co., Bayview Services Inc., and Pullman Services have turned close collaboration into reality. The team successfully erected the construction personnel hoist (CPH), made structural connections, and fabricated portals that enable work to begin within University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings)'s 100 McAllister building in San Francisco's Academic Village. The CPH ultimately preserves the century-old landmark's historic fabric while allowing for expedited installation, ensuring the existing interior elevators could be decommissioned on schedule. What the Hull’s happening with Chapman Street Bridge? ?? In case you don’t know, this iconic structure, also known as Sculcoates Bridge, dates back to 1874, making it Hull’s oldest bridge. Closed to vehicles since April 2020 due to safety concerns, it’s been a long road to restoration for this Grade II-listed swing bridge. Hull City Council appointed an engineering consultant for this complex project back in 2022, with structural surveys and design work taking place to determine the best approach for restoring the bridge’s historic character. With a budget of ￡6.5 million, the redevelopment is designed to repair and preserve the bridge and extend its lifespan by 50 years. The concept design phase wrapped up in September 2023, with the detailed design and site works to follow. While there’s no definite reopening date, completion is projected for late 2025. Strongly agree with this and another great article from the IPI Alliance team. There is naivety in the industry that as long as consultant specifications are detailed and expansive enough, everything will be alright. This quote is so true and is something I think about daily when dealing with the various delivery teams across projects: “Such is the complexity of modern construction that no principal contractor, particularly under a design and build contract, can be expected to retain in its own employment people with the full range of skills required for every project it takes on.” We need to get away from the constant risk covering to actually focus on how best to deliver projects and achieve best value and quality. IPI Alliancing is genuine solution to this.
