With less than one week to go until we all head to the polls, we have summarised all of the key planning, housing, energy and infrastructure policies, promises and aspirations made by the main political parties in England. One thing is clear - planning reform is needed. But how this is achieved, and the priorities and commitments that are anticipated to reach this shared end goal differ significantly. Ahead of this week’s General Election, my colleagues Rachel Coleman and Nitesh Patel have compiled a summary of the key points relevant to the London construction market. With a potential change in government likely, it is encouraging to see that the main parties remain committed to the New Hospitals Programme and have introduced new ideas, such as a ten-year infrastructure strategy and investing in the improvement of a significant number of homes. The establishment of Skills England is set to play a crucial role in unlocking future growth, but the construction industry needs to engage and drive opportunities for skills development. Are roads an antidote to populism? In the four constituencies that recently elected Reform MPs, one common theme stands out: “missing roads”. Our research shows that gaps in this vital infrastructure could be a key signal for areas most likely to turn politically. Four constituencies, four missing roads: ·??????Great Yarmouth’s Acle Straight ·??????Clacton’s A133 ·??????Boston and Skegness’s M11 extension ·??????South Basildon’s Lower Thames Crossing Our research mapped these missing links and analysed constituencies where similar infrastructure gaps exist on roads, rail and even ferries - to identify who might be next in line. These constituencies could be crucial in future elections. Projects like the A66 dualling, the A47 upgrade, and the Lower Thames Crossing aren’t just about improving travel—they represent a chance to rebuild trust and address the frustrations that fuel populist narratives.
