I had the privilege of introducing Anna Baumann for her keynote "Beyond the Agora: Esports and the Fractured Dream of a Unified Society" at the Esports Research Network conference #ERNC2024, and what an inspiring session it was! Anna masterfully articulated a critical perspective on esports' evolution. She reminded us of the industry's founding promises: a truly unified, equal, and borderless competitive space that could transcend the limitations we've seen in traditional sports. However, as she pointed out, there's a growing tension between these idealistic origins and today's reality, where capitalistic forces are reshaping the landscape much like they did in traditional sports. Yet, rather than accepting this drift, Anna emphasized our collective responsibility to bridge this widening gap. Her call to action was clear: we need focused research and dedicated effort to keep esports accessible and truly borderless. It's our task to ensure that the industry's transformative potential isn't lost to market forces alone.
