AMORIM’s challenge: Create a device to extract cork, safeguarding access to the raw material without risking the cork's regeneration cycle, and, at the same time, simplifying the process for all workers. GRANDESIGN’s solution: A lightweight, user-friendly device that combines advanced engineering, creativity, and functionality, streamlining cork extraction and protecting cork oak trees. Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory used #3Dprinting technology to develop a precast concrete mold using carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic. These molds outperform traditional wood molds by boosting production speed and durability. The result? Faster, more efficient large-scale projects like the Domino Park renovation in NYC. Nature's 3.8 billion-year R&D lab has been quietly perfecting designs long before we came along. At the Design 2024 Conference today I have talked about a subject that I am truly passionate about: Durability as a socio-techno-economic concept. While durability is commonly associated with the length of useful life of a product in a physical sense, we sought to position the concept of durability at the centre of Circular Economy: optimising the useful life of products is after all the key to Sustainability! The key argument that we are making is that users behaviours, attitudes and preferences have a significant impact on the actual useful life of consumer products, and this needs to be taken into account in setting up design life targets for the product at the design stage, alongside considerations of higher value end of life options for the system or parts of the system – including repair, remanufacturing, upcycling. We propose a new definition for durability as the ability of a product or system to meet the intended useful life goals of the users and the design team, and have set out a research agenda to evidence and operationalise this definition.
