Individuals with diverse skin tones are more likely to misdiagnosed or diagnosed later in their care because side effects of treatment or sequela of disease appear differently on their skin and are poorly represented in medical education. The Oncology Nursing Society has prepared 5 interactive case studies to help you learn to assess and manage treatment-related skin toxicities in patients with diverse skin tones and apply the appropriate nursing interventions. #oncologynursing #healthequity

Our new article has already been published! Assessing the Effectiveness of qSOFA and SIRS Scoring Systems:t a Single-Center Pavlina Peneva, Yana Bocheva, Silviya P. Nikolova Abstract In the context of post-2016 redefinitions of sepsis and septic shock, this prospective, non-interventional single-center clinical trial was carried out at St. Marina University Hospital, Varna, Bulgaria. The study encompassed 87 participants, approximately 45 of whom presented with sepsis and septic shock. Employing logistic regression, the study aimed to assess the predictive value of the Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) and quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) criteria in sepsis. Additionally, sensitivity and specificity were evaluated using ROC curve analysis. The findings revealed the substantial predictive potential of both SIRS and qSOFA for septic patient mortality. Notably, the qSOFA score exhibited a significantly higher likelihood (2.581 times, p = 0.0001, 95% CI 1.557 - 4.279) of predicting mortality compared to the SIRS scale (2.050-fold, p = 0.004, 95% CI 1.255 - 3.349). The study contributes to guiding the enhancement of patient care strategies, effortlessly aligning with the core tenets of evidence-based nursing practices.

Something to save healthcare institutions ??????….. Something to push for….. Have you been overlooking the benefits of having a child life specialist on your side? Newer research continues to support the message in this infographic.
When it comes to institutional savings at hospitals and medical settings, child life makes a BIG impact in more areas than one. Check out these numbers found in the Values Proposition Statement: A radiation oncology program recorded savings upwards of $775,000 per year when children participated in a play-based procedural preparation and support with a CCLS (2016). For children in need of intra-articular joint injections, preparation and procedural support from a CCLS generated a 33% cost savings by reducing the need for deep sedation - all whilst maintaining a 97.5% completion rate in those cases performed without sedation (2019). When parents/caregivers partner with CCLSs in providing preparation and procedural support, studies have demonstrated a 28% reduction in the use of oral Versed? (midazolam) in pediatric surgical patients - again, without increasing length of preoperative or induction time (2019). A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) program reported an annual net savings of $117,870 following the implementation of a mock scanner preparation intervention (2015). You can read more about institutional outcomes of procedural preparation and support in "The Value of Certified Child Life Specialists: Direct and Downstream Optimization of Pediatric Patient and Family Outcomes" here: https://ow.ly/hSXl50RKxyW
