Happy #NationalMarineSanctuaryDay! ?? For over 50 years, the U.S. National Marine Sanctuary System – made up of 16 national marine sanctuaries and 2 marine national monuments – has safeguarded species and critical habitats, supported scientific research, and protected our nation’s marine cultural heritage. ? ?? The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary is particularly meaningful for our Golden State Wind project in Central California. This marine sanctuary thoughtfully balances marine conservation, protection of cultural resources, and #cleanenergy to address the impacts of climate change. We respectfully acknowledge the efforts of Tribes, Indigenous Peoples, and federal, state, and local officials to advance the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary.? ? ?? Our Bluepoint Wind project is located northwest of the Hudson Canyon, which is the largest submarine canyon along the Atlantic coast and has been proposed as a future National Marine Sanctuary. Bluepoint Wind has joined the Hudson Canyon Sanctuary Advisory Council, and the scientific studies and monitoring conducted within the project lease area will contribute to better understanding the region’s complex ecosystem.? ? At OW Ocean Winds NORTH AMERICA, we recognize the environmental and cultural significance of the current and proposed marine sanctuaries and we look forward to continuing to work together to combat #climatechange and preserve our natural resources. ?? ? ?? Happy World Ocean Day ?? ?? Today, The Nature Trust of British Columbia joins the global community in celebrating our oceans, which cover over 70% of our planet and are home to a remarkable diversity of life. In B.C., our oceans and estuaries are particularly special, providing critical habitats for salmon, migratory birds, and marine mammals. Estuaries, where freshwater rivers meet the salty sea, are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth, supporting both marine and terrestrial species. This #WorldOceanDay's theme is Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate, and aims to grow the movement to protect our planet through transformative collaboration. Along with over fifteen First Nations communities, environmental eNGOS, academic groups and provincial and federal governments, we're working to build the resilience of B.C.'s estuaries and coastal ecosystems through the Enhancing Estuary Resilience project. An extremely well reported story about the declining state of a Caribbean reef that has long been considered the healthiest reef in the Caribbean and perhaps the world. This is a long read , but well worth it. The author talks about the problem of shifting baselines - a conservation concept that our perception or measurement of the state of the environment is based on our own short experience with the place. If you are concerned about the future of the world’s oceans, this is an article that should be on your list.

Coral reefs are one of the world’s most valuable ecosystems in terms of ecological, economic and cultural capital. Although coral reefs cover less than 1 percent of the sea floor, they are home to about 25 percent of all marine species. Unfortunately, recent reports indicate that 58 to 70 percent of coral reefs globally are directly threatened by human-associated activities. On this #WorldOceansDay, we’re highlighting our work with NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and aramco to support coral conservation through the Coral Reef Conservation Fund. Since 2000, the program has awarded $23 million to more than 400 projects working to protect, conserve and restore the nation’s coral reef ecosystems. These projects have assisted broad-scale coral reef management by establishing new techniques for assessing and monitoring reef health and new fishery management models. Together, we are working to conserve coral reefs and our oceans for future generations. ???? ??: Coral reef in Hawai'i. Photo ? It’s World Oceans Day. We’re working hard to protect precious oceans and marine biodiversity right around the world. Here’s just five ways we are helping: 1. Investing a record $1.2 billion to protect the Great Barrier Reef. 2. Tripled the size of Macquarie Island Marine Park - one of the biggest acts of conservation in the world. 3. Fought for and won a global commitment to protect 30% of land and oceans by 2030. 4. Half a billion in extra funding for Antarctic and Southern Ocean science in the budget. 5. Investing nearly $3 million to tackle deadly ghost nets. And there’s so much more.

MARINE CONSERVATION INSTITUTE Every day is Ocean Day for the tight-knit team of marine scientists, experts, and enthusiasts at Marine Conservation Institute. The ocean is fundamental to life on Earth, but marine species face mass extinction, and climate change threatens to transform our oceans forever. - Our Blue Parks and Blue Sparks set the highest standards in marine conservation. - Our Marine Protection Atlas (MPAtlas) is our compass, assessing global marine protection and tracking progress toward the 30x30 goal. - Our scientists continue to make waves with high-profile research and advocacy efforts to influence policy and conservation actions. As we chart our course to fully protect more of our ocean, the clock is ticking, and your support is more valuable than ever. Be a co-captain on this great voyage to protect our wild oceans, safeguard countless species, recover marine habitats, and empower coastal communities. CORAL RESTORATION NEWS: Super Coral Programme (MSC Foundation) - Preventing coral extinction through the establishment of 'Super Corals' in Ocean Cay Despite covering less than?1% of the Earth’s surface, coral reefs support more than?25% of marine life. Over the past 70 years, more than 50% of the world’s coral reefs have been lost.?These vital ecosystems now face grave threats to their survival from destructive fishing practices, sedimentation, pollution and above all climate change-induced bleaching events that damage and kill coral. These combined ongoing stresses have far-reaching consequences, affecting not just the environment but also the economies, societies and cultures that rely on the reefs. That's why the MSC Foundation is committed to restoring coral reefs with our?Super Coral Programme?at?Ocean Cay?in The Bahamas. According to conservation scientists, the key to reversing the rapid decline in coral reefs lies in assisting coral’s natural selection process by establishing certain hardy species and varieties, dubbed “Super Coral”, which are more resilient to severe environmental stresses like extreme heat. Scientists estimate that if we do nothing, 90% of the world’s tropical reefs will be gone by 2043, impacting nearly 500 million people who depend on them for food, income and coastal protection. But how much does the public know about the role of our oceans in protecting our planet? ?? To celebrate our partnership with the Blue Earth Summit in the UK, we took to the streets of London to put people's knowledge to the test. ?? If any of you haven't seen it yet, you should check out this inspiring vide from Austin Bowden-Kerby and his 'Reefs Of Hope' project out in Fiji. In Austins words "Reefs of Hope is the first coral-focused coral reef adaptation strategy proposed for implementation globally. While coral restoration is the foundation of the work, we can not restore a collapsing system until we first stabilize it" https://lnkd.in/eDnA3DJh
