In April, our grantee, the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE), convened over 60 state and federal policymakers, edtech innovators, school system leaders, and advocates to discuss how AI can drive meaningful, positive change in education. In a new report, CRPE highlights key insights that emerged from this convening: how AI can enable needed changes in our schools, how current conditions in the edtech market act as barriers to closing equity gaps, and how policy and practice must adapt for lasting system change.

Independent Consultant in Mathematics and Science Education, specializing in K-12 Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.
Be cautious of any school that declares its primary focus this year to be on math, literacy, science, etc. The emphasis ought to be on learning and the pedagogical practices that yield results, including how we plan for instruction in all subject areas. This is where many fall short. By transforming how we plan for instruction, we can fundamentally change the educational approach. It's essential to recognize that when a school prioritizes learning, it leads to a thorough examination and improvement of teaching methods across the disciplines, ensuring a more effective educational journey for all students. Furthermore, the role of teaching as the critical factor in student success cannot be overstated. The advent of AI has been revolutionizing teaching practices, offering new methodologies, personalized learning opportunities, and data-driven insights to enhance educational outcomes. Embracing these advancements in AI can significantly augment the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes, underscoring the importance of innovative pedagogical approaches in today's educational landscape. Now, here lies the challenge: What is your focus? The focus you choose will shape the educational experiences of your students and their readiness for the future. #schoolleadership #pedagogy #teachingandlearning #instructionalcoherence #educationadministration #principals #instructionalcore #educationinnovation #Aiineducation #internationalschools #teachingandlearning

Yes Beth Eakins great to chat all things maths and Multiply. Particularly interesting to talk about the merits of online learning. Recognition that face to face in room is not right for everyone, though it is for most. We have taken some aspects of being crunched in to online learning during the pandemic. But perhaps we have not kept enough for those individuals that preferred and thrived with online learning. Education mustn't be a one size fits all, but often is. FE is excellent at meeting the needs of individuals. It may be that we need to review what went well from the pandemic and that online learning may be part of the solution for absenteeism in some situations. What are peoples thoughts re online learning particularly in FE and adult education. Personally I love being in a room and feel that teaching and learning is a social construct and is more impactful when done face to face in person. But for some people it is better online synchronously or asynchronously. When I was involved in the Stoke opportunity area some students preferred online learning during the pandemic (not published). I am really interested in what people think and what the research shows. A great meeting with Martin Newton of MEI today where among other exciting Maths related topics, including the amazing FE Maths Challenges (more on that soon), we discussed how we harness the power of online learning. We, as I'm sure like many others out there, have such a positive shared experience of the power of online learning. Over the years we have watched it transform lives, and open doors that would otherwise be closed. Perhaps those of us, who love online learning, thought the pandemic would change, improve, fine tune online learning, making it more accessible for more students. Yet whilst we hear success stories, the article in The Guardian by Rosie Anfilogoff "Higher education was easily accessible to disabled people during Covid. Why are we being shut out now?" highlighted that there is so much more that we need to do. The last few months following and reading articles by the Forbes Writer and Pioneer of AI education Dan Fitzpatrick including his definition of why educational establishments find themselves in a "Liminal Space" has been truly insightful, and I for one, look forward to working with more like-minded educators. #stongertogether #education #onlinelearning #partnerships

We had a wonderful dialogue with Spencer and Ghazali in exploring the use of AI in school. Ghazali raised some excellent points on how AI personalization can revolutionize learning experiences for students. The idea of AI catering to individual learning styles and paces is certainly exciting. We also need to emphasize the importance of ethical implementation of such tools. As AI continues to make strides in the education sector, it's crucial to ensure it complements, rather than replaces, human educators. Let's foster a discussion – what are your thoughts on the role of AI in education? Share your comments below!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jay Mahardale, the principal of Northland Primary, along with his leadership team, which includes Vice Principals Mr. Richard Chong and Mrs. Gina Cho. Our conversation was enlightening, as we delved into their vision for the school and their commitment to fostering a nurturing and dynamic educational environment. We discussed how the integration of AI into our educational practices stands at a crossroads, presenting us with both remarkable opportunities and significant challenges. With a measured and thoughtful approach, we can leverage AI to nurture each student’s unique potential, helping them grow, serve and excel. This requires a commitment to ensuring that AI is implemented ethically and effectively, always keeping the human essence of education at the forefront. As we navigate this new terrain, it's essential to embrace AI's potential to craft a more personalized and effective learning experience. AI can revolutionize how we understand and respond to individual student needs, providing tailored support that fosters deeper understanding and skill development. However, we must remain acutely aware of the accompanying risks. If not managed wisely, AI could inadvertently widen existing educational disparities and lead to over-reliance on technology, undermining the critical human interactions that are foundational to learning. Our mission, therefore, is clear. We must harness AI's capabilities to empower students, helping them not just to face the future but to thrive within it. This path requires our collective wisdom and vigilance to ensure that AI enhances educational equity and fosters independence rather than dependence. The decisions we make today will shape the educational landscape of tomorrow, determining whether AI becomes a powerful tool for empowerment and growth or a catalyst for inequality and stagnation. The stakes are high, but with careful stewardship, the future of education can be bright and inclusive. Overall, the leadership at Northland Primary, under the guidance of Mr. Mahardale and his vice principals, Mr. Chong and Mrs. Cho, is truly exemplary. Their collective vision and unwavering commitment to education promise a bright future for the students of Northland Primary.

“AI offers unprecedented opportunities to tackle complex challenges like widening achievement gaps, teacher shortages, and mental health crises among students — but AI systems must also promote equity and access, particularly for historically marginalized communities. There must be policy guardrails to protect student privacy. And there must be high quality training to empower educators. Achieving this vision requires bold leadership and a clear understanding of each stakeholder’s role. While AI can be a powerful tool to address long-standing inequities and improve educational outcomes, it requires strategic and collaborative efforts. The call to action is clear: Educators, policymakers, education technology innovators and community leaders must join forces to create resilient, adaptable education systems.” How California can help all schools harness AI, avoid its pitfalls with Robin Lake from Center on Reinventing Public Education: https://lnkd.in/gedDjM2p #AIinEducation #DigitalDivide #ResponsibleAI
