The EG Awards for 2024 shortlist?has been announced?and we are thrilled to see that RNIB’s?The Grimaldi Building has been chosen as a finalist for the Inclusive Design Award. This is an award that recognises a project where inclusivity is central to the design, ensuring accessibility and functionality for all and where inclusive thinking has been integrated throughout the design process, from concept to completion. RNIB's HQ, The Grimaldi Building, is the first in the UK to embrace the neurodiversity standard, BSI PAS 6493. Designed to cater to the needs of neurodivergent individuals, as well as blind and partially sighted individuals, the building?demonstrates?how good design and expertise can ensure any space can be created or adapted for a wide range of user requirements. Jean Hewitt, inclusive environment specialist at Buro Happold, and technical author of the PAS 6463 Neurodiversity design standard said, “What we’ve shown with this project, which isn’t even a new building, is that it’s possible to design for inclusivity and neurodiversity. If it can be done here, on a charity’s budget, anybody can do it." Working with Kay Elliott Architects, we were engaged by RNIB to provide inclusive design, lighting, acoustics and asset consulting. The?Grimaldi Building has been designed with consideration for all potential user needs and particularly includes innovative design interventions for neurodivergent, and blind and partially sighted people. The project has ensured the RNIB’s London headquarters is an exemplar of inclusive design, acting as a showcase of best practice and a testament to Buro Happold’s unique ability to capitalise upon multi-disciplinary expertise to improve people’s lives. The response from all of you to the webinars I’ve held this year … Well, it has left me floored. (Facaded?) Thank you to all of you who showed up last week. We talked about #Steni panels and how COLOURFUL they can make a facade design. I showed everyone my parent’s wedding photo, in black and white. (Wouldn’t it be great to see it in colour?) My buddy Joseph from Steni was there. We had a lot of fun. I’m always blown away by how many people sign up when I host one of these webinars I’ve had 700+ attendees put their trust in me this past year. Watching the registrations come in is like seeing colour added to a #facadedesign. Suddenly, things just POP. These registrations go from 0 to 100+, sometimes in just a few days. Once this past year, I had some 250 people sign up. That’s a lot of people putting their trust in me. And I take it seriously. What makes hosting these so special for me is how people don’t just sign up — they show up, engage with the topics, and bring their questions to the conversation. I love the questions that stump me, it tells me attendees are interested and excited about these topics too. Architects, as you know, your deadline for CEU credits is coming up fast.
