Innovative Operators Take Charge: Could This Be the Solution to Staffing Shortages? As the nursing home industry grapples with a federal minimum staffing mandate, the need to build a strong frontline workforce has never been more urgent. Unfortunately, civil monetary penalties (CMPs) can stall in-house training programs, while existing staff face burnout from increased demands. In our opinion, operators taking matters into their own hands is an amazing way to tackle these challenges. For instance, Alabama-based Schmidt Wallace Healthcare launched its own nursing school, producing thousands of certified nurse aides (CNAs). Others are partnering with local academic institutions or expanding their in-house programs to secure the staff they need. What other innovative ideas could operators explore to solve staffing issues? This proactive approach might just be the key to ensuring a sustainable and well-supported workforce. Empowering our nurses to make decisions on behalf of their patients and their careers is a foundation of our 10-year-strategic plan at MultiCare. The fact is patient outcomes improve when nurses are empowered to make necessary decisions and influence positive change. It also is a building block for resiliency and professional development. While there is always more work to do, I am proud of the shared nursing leadership culture we are building at MultiCare. Last year, we documented nearly 300 separate decisions nurses made that related directly to our nursing practice. Nursing involvement in our shared nursing leadership program has grown from 14 percent in 2018 to 72 percent in 2023. More importantly, our nurses reported feeling less burned out in 2023 when compared to the previous year, although burnout is still a very big issue across the healthcare industry and within the clinical ranks at MultiCare. Thank you to all our incredible nurses who are participating in our shared leadership councils. You are making a real difference in the outcomes of our patients. #multicare #multicarenurses #structuralempowerment #resiliency?

As part of our new report, "Trends in nursing 2024: The new normal for America's most trusted profession," we asked nursing professionals about the keys to job satisfaction. What was the top response? A call for "additional staff" on nursing floors. While getting properly compensated for the value that nurses and aides provide is crucial, we must go beyond that to make meaningful progress in overcoming the nursing shortage. Check out our report to learn more about the key trends nurses and nursing assistants will shape the healthcare landscape in 2024. https://lnkd.in/dcvnGN7W

Interesting article from Matthew Kucinski on the #nursing program Calvin University: “Bettering patient outcomes is the goal,” said?Carol Rossman, graduate nursing director at Calvin University. “If you are someone who wants to make changes, views yourself as a leader, sees things on the floors or systems you are working in that could be changed to improve patient outcomes, then this is the program for you.” “We are equipping people to be an agent of renewal and to think deeply,” said Ayoola. “When preparing nurses, it’s important to think about that preparation from a holistic perspective. How am I delivering care, how am I thinking about the whole person, where they are coming from, where they are going back to. It’s not simply thinking of just the acute setting alone.” #innovation #healthcare #medicine #personaldevelopment https://lnkd.in/eQMYAGYz

Skilled Nursing News reports states like #Vermont #NewYork #maryland and #pennsylvania are among the highest utilizing agency nursing staff. The increasing use of agency staff weighed on nursing homes’ bottom lines, with agency staff being 50% to 60% more expensive per hour than directly employed staff, according to the findings. Investing in in-house CNA training isn't just about upskilling—it's a strategic move that slashes overheads and enhances care quality. By nurturing our CNAs internally, we've curbed reliance on expensive agency nursing staff, saving substantial costs while fostering a more cohesive, knowledgeable care team. It's a win-win: reduced expenses, heightened expertise, and, most importantly, improved resident outcomes. Ready to take control of your pipeline?
