So, discussing product design with a panel I realised that every person in the group is at a different level of comprehension and expectation.? It is interesting to identify with each member and understand what their vision or thoughts are on their business and many a times it is really a mind opening exchange.? ?What are main traits you need as a great activewear or sportswear product developer, product engineer, Garment tec ? ? ?? You need to have the tenacity to push through any obstacle in your way. ?? The want to do something differently, how ever scary it may seen to solve a problem at any level. ?? Being part of a products creation, working alongside like minded people. ?? Happy to wear many hats. ?? The ability to focus on the details, how ever small they may seem.? ?? The curiosity to ask the right questions, and see what other may not see. ?? The need to understand more on what is happening, at every stage. ?? Being ready to hear the bad news, that will lead to the good news. ?? Never afraid to ask what may seem a silly question. ?? Getting close to your target market or consumer needs. ?? Always happy to share with others, and always learning. ? Beyond visual style, we need expression and so design is a visual translator for all that lays beneath. You could see the most simplistic logo design and be stumped as to why people appear to like it so much. I like to share insights on brand strategy and breaking down some of the big stories in history so you can see the mechanics at work. What I love about this story is it shows how Nike used the principles of brand strategy to design their footwear. In other words, Nike Air Jordan’s are literally Michael Jordan and every good thing he represents built from the inside out. You take all that away and the shoe is totally worthless…that’s brand equity. This story makes Nike literally Billions every year. The shoe itself facilitates the connection to that story. You don’t have to be Nike to build a brand - I’ve got 2 clients that spring to mind who I’ve branded who are absolutely flying right now. They didn’t hold themselves back and went all in. What do you think? As designer's, we are biased. it's so easy for us to neglect others opinion and do what we think is right. A mad scientist and designer have something in common. we both fall in love with our creation. And refuse to change it or give it up when required to do so. So today I wanted to share with you a similar story where I fell in love with my first design and was asked to make it more generic. But the lessons I learned here are, ? It's not about how good the design looks. ? It's about how well it performs. The first one was more focused on the whole design rather than the product (shoe) Meanwhile the second now gives more space for the product to breathe and actually be in focus. Perfection first time doesn't exist in the sportswear apparel industry. It's surprising when brands include a small safety margin in their timeline for: ? Imperfect?lab dips. ? Further wearer trials. ? Addition fabric testing. ? Unforeseen production delay. ? An extra sample for refinement. ? Delayed customer design sign off. The risk to brands working to such tight deadlines are: ? Missed launch dates. ? Likelihood of production mistakes. ? Stressed, burnt out and unhappy workforce.
