We are so excited to take on the torch for Pride House WeHo-LA28 “The City of West Hollywood and Out Athlete Fund have been in conversation for a year about delivering a Pride House that reflects the creativity and energy of the Los Angeles area, basing the 17-day event in West Hollywood Park. “As the first openly gay athlete at my college and now the Mayor of the City of West Hollywood, the center of LGBTQ+ activism and a hub of culture, creativity, music, and inclusivity, I look forward to welcoming the world to experience Pride House in West Hollywood in 2028,” said Erickson.”

Whether it be state-by-state laws that are divergent in nature, international federations putting out mandates that may not match a member country’s intrinsic values and all in the background of the pandemic-era reckoning about race and diversity throughout the United States, national governing bodies throughout the U.S. Olympic movement have a list of topics to debate and measures to enact beyond the mere goal of preparing athletes for this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. The idea of diversity, equity and inclusion in sports has been a years-long discussion. Several national governing bodies are working on how to support athletes in the LGBTQ+ space and increase diversity in sport through programs that are more than merely DEI-driven initiatives.

?? **Embracing Intersectionality in Sports: My Proposed Diverse Model of Disability** ?? In the world of sports, athletes should never be viewed solely through a single lens—whether it's their race, ability, or sexuality. These identities do not exist in isolation but rather intersect in unique and complex ways. This is why I’ve developed the Zecca mode (see infographic in comments), a framework that seeks to shift the narrative around athletes and their identities and considers the whole person especially their intersecting identities. Athletes are more than just one aspect of who they are—be it their physical ability, ethnicity, or gender identity. By acknowledging the intersections of these identities, we allow for a more inclusive, authentic understanding of people's experiences. #Diversity #Inclusion #Intersectionality #DisabilityAwareness #ZeccaModel #AthleteEmpowerment #DiverseModel #SportsEquality #BreakingBarriers #IntersectionalIdentity #RepresentationMatters https://lnkd.in/exCE4GQD.

This makes me so angry! The sad reality is that disability discrimination is still alive and well. What a shame that such a big staple of entrepreneurship such as Fortnum and Mason felt comfortable with this. So many still view DEI as something dispensable, because for so many it is performative at best. Real inclusion is not about running events and teaching about it inclusion. Yes that is important but it’s about how you do the work and include everyone. In particular as an organization and as a society. I am sometimes surprised at how much organizations look at marketing their inclusion but when it comes to true inclusion, disability is one truly underrepresented at all levels, visible disabilities are the ones people want to showcase in a tokenistic manner with photos (we are including everyone), non visible disability is the choice most because society don’t want to see visible representation which is uncomfortable visually for many people. And sadly the outcome remains the same: discrimination. All I Can Say Is Do Better #inclusion #celabrateall #dontbeperformative #diversityisourstrength

Last night, as I was scrolling through my Facebook feed, I came across a post from Philippine Airlines (PAL). It was a tribute to three remarkable Filipino Paralympians: Ernie Gawilan, Jerrold Mangliwan, and Cendy Asusano, as they prepare to represent the country in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. As a person with a disability (PWD) and an inclusion advocate, this post struck a chord with me. It showcased the power of visibility in promoting awareness and acceptance of people with disabilities. What's even more striking is that PAL used the same format and hashtag, #PRsGoFurther, as they did in an earlier post celebrating our Olympians. This consistency demonstrates a genuine commitment to inclusivity, highlighting the achievements of all Filipino athletes, regardless of ability. This isn't the first time PAL has demonstrated its commitment to disability inclusion. I recently wrote an article about the accommodations they made for me, a person with a non-apparent disability, during my travels. Their efforts to ensure a comfortable and dignified experience went beyond mere lip service. PAL's consistent support for PWDs, exemplified by their social media campaigns, serves as an inspiration to other brands. It is a reminder that true inclusion goes beyond mere compliance with regulations. It requires a genuine understanding of the needs of people with disabilities and a willingness to go the extra mile to ensure their full participation in society. I hope other brands follow suit, taking inspiration from PAL's approach. Let's move beyond lip service when it comes to inclusion. Let's acknowledge and support PWDs in all aspects of life. Let's create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. And as our Paralympians compete in Paris, let's give them the same level of attention and support we showered on our Olympians. They deserve our cheers, our encouragement, and our recognition. Let's show them that we are proud of their dedication and their achievements. #PWDVisibility #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityInclusion #Paralympians #Paris2024Paralympics #Accessibility #DiversityAndInclusion #InclusionMatters #EqualOpportunity #RepresentationMatters #ParaAthletics #Philippines

?????????????????? ???????? - “?????? ???? ???????????? ?????? ?? ???????? ???? ???? ?????? ????” The Olympic Games Paris 2024 has started from 26 July, and there is a positive development for the LGBTIQA+ community. 191 publicly declared LGBT Olympians in Paris Olympics 2024 vs 186 publicly declared LGBT Olympians in Tokyo Olympics 2021 vs 5 publicly declared LGBT Olympians in Sydney Olympics 2000 Definitely shows the positive progress in acceptance. It is liberating to be your true self, no longer a need to hide behind a "mask" ??????…. A growing awareness and acceptance does not equate to everyone needing to come out. Some may still not be emotionally or mentally prepared to deal with coming out to their circle. ?????????? ??????… the elements of 1) shame and guilt towards living previously a life of lie to those they value 2) fear of rejection by societal/cultural norms and closed loved ones to be processed internally. ???????????????????? ??????????... Did you know that over 1 billion people on this planet have some sort of disability? Rome gave birth to the first Paralympic Games in 1960. The importance of the Paralympics goes beyond the sports field, serving as a reminder of the need for recognition and inclusion. Over the years, the Paralympics have challenged deep-rooted beliefs about disability, fostering social inclusion in host countries. Let's strive to have them alongside us, without any discrimination, as they are an integral part of our society. Let's shine a spotlight on these incredible athletes, showcasing their exceptional abilities despite their challenges. By increasing their visibility and celebrating their achievements, we can drive societal change, fostering more inclusion and empowerment in their everyday lives. Each Paralympic athlete embodies courage, determination, inspiration, and equality. It's crucial that we support them in their quest for these values in real life. The Games are on... ?? #Paralympics #Inclusion #Empowerment #KondurSpeaks

The power of inclusive language: inclusiviTEA talks ?? Words shape perceptions, and when it comes to inclusivity & disability representation, they can either lift you up or bring you down! In a recent example, media outlets have been referring to Paralympians as "participants" rather than "competitors," unlike their able-bodied counterparts. This small word choice carries a big message, and diminishes the incredible achievements of these athletes! Referring to Paralympians as “participants” undermines their achievements, and reduces their athletic feats to mere acts of involvement rather than hard-fought competition. It perpetuates the harmful stereotype that disabled athletes are somehow less capable or less competitive than their able-bodied peers. This kind of language, whether intentional or not, contributes to the wider narrative that people with disabilities are less deserving of recognition and respect! Inclusive language isn’t about being "politically correct", it’s about giving people the respect they deserve. It ensures that everyone feels seen, valued, and understood for who they truly are. [#Access image description: 2 screenshots of articles around medias using the word participant instead of competitors to qualify paralympians, the 1st has a picture of a tennis player in a wheelchair with the text “#NotPlayingGames this is a campaign by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), to highlight how paralympians are often described in the media as ‘participants’ rather than ‘competitors’ - compared to athletes without a disability”. the second reads “paralympians have often been described by media as ‘participants’ and not ‘competitors’. At paris 2024 it’s time we set the record straight. #NotPlayingGames”] #InclusiviTEATalks #InclusiveLanguage #RepresentationMatters #Inclusion #LanguageMatters #NotPlayingGames #InnovateUk
