Sending the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (Queensland)’s 50 Policy Futures Graduates out into the public service this week to start their rotations through departments. My advice to them last week: ??Public service is a verb. ??Political views are ok, even strongly held ones, as long as you leave them at the door and act impartially in your role. ??Give frank, fearless and sound advice. ??We serve the government of the day, but our first loyalty is to the people of Queensland. ??Process is part of public service- we deal with public money after all. But those who stand out use process to find a way to done and get results. ??There’s meaning and purpose in a public service career. But sometimes it takes a few role changes to find it. Don’t settle until you do. Life’s too short. #2024policyfutures #graduates

As economic developers, it is our duty to keep our community informed on matters related to our labor force. As of March 2024, our unemployment rate increased slightly to 4.2% which is still lower than the state and regional averages. Many factors can affect unemployment rates such as seasonal and cyclical employment, where individuals like college students enter and exit the workforce while in school or folks who retire and leave the workforce. This is expected given our economic conditions, but it is also important for us to remember the resources to which we have access. To those looking to advance their education and skills, Northshore Technical Community College (NTCC) provides a wide range of trade, workforce, and technical certifications and academic degree programs that will help prepare for a career. Our partners at Tri-Parish Works are another great resource, as they have access to various career placement opportunities and programs to help citizens seeking employment find the right job match. In Prince George's County, we are reimagining the re-entry process for our returning citizens! With informed perspectives and new systems, we are taking a holistic approach to re-entry, aimed at reducing recidivism in our County.?? County Executive Angela Alsobrooks launched our Returning Citizens Affairs Division (RCAD) in 2022, led by Michael Williams, MPA, after recommendations made by our Returning Citizens Advisory Board, which was launched in 2019. Because we understand that securing a job is not the only thing one needs to do to successfully transition back into society, RCAD also offers mentorship, transitional housing, document preparation, and more.??? ? The impact that these initiatives & programs have had on participants so far is promising and recidivism amongst participants is down significantly. For us, Second Chance Month is beyond just a holiday.? ? Learn more about our re-entry initiatives & programs at: mypgc.us/RCAD? ? According to the Strada State Opportunity Index for North Carolina, 73% of graduates experience a positive 10-year ROI for all degrees; however, the cost of education after high school in NC requires 20-30 hours of work per week during the school year and working full-time in the summers. The last stat is somewhat problematic: balancing a full-time education with a minimum-wage job doesn’t always equate to a high-wage career post-graduation. The Forward Fund is a pathway for financing additional training without the pressures of paying for your education immediately. Additionally, TFF partners with employers to ensure jobs are readily available for individuals post-training. Ultimately, the goal is to restore career opportunities for individuals who want more for themselves, their families, and the community. #talent #jobs #training #education #workforce #economicmobility #northcarolina #chartyourfuture Meaghan Dennison https://bit.ly/3A5cD7x

Important new study exploring long-term impacts of career guidance from JULIE MOOTE and Louise Archer - here's the abstract: https://lnkd.in/dPtEKW_G Does school-based careers education, advice, information and guidance (CEAIG) have any influence on later life outcomes? This paper reports regression analyses using 7,635 survey responses from young people in England aged 21–22. Significant positive relationships were found between self-reported CEAIG activities experienced at age 14–16 and a range of adult outcomes reported at age 21–22. Both the?quantity?and?quality?of these CEAIG activities were important predictors: the?more?CEAIG activities experienced at age 14–16 and the more?helpful?these activities were perceived as being, the more likely the young people were to report life satisfaction, positive future outlooks and feel better prepared for the future. These relationships are held after controlling for gender, ethnicity, social deprivation and school type. Young people who reported experiencing more and better quality CEAIG activities at school were also more likely to be in education, training or work at age 21–22. Findings are discussed in the light of recent legislation relating to careers support in England, highlighting the importance of ensuring that the needs of these young people transitioning into the workforce and adulthood are met.
More is more: exploring the relationship between young people’s experiences of school-based career education, information, advice and guidance at age 14–16 and wider adult outcomes at age 21–22 in England
