Sometimes, the most significant growth happens when we stay close to home. Initially dreaming of moving to explore new states, Sydney chose a residency with Legacy Health in Portland. As she immersed herself in the community and her passion for psychiatric pharmacy, she realized that Portland was the perfect place to create new connections and make lasting memories. Pharmacist and health promotion researcher: mental health and wellbeing. Quantitative and qualitative methods. Trained in PhotoVoice. Teaching experience at undergraduate & postgraduate level.
This week I've been reading a new scoping review from Dr Tierney's team in Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences - University of Oxford. I was surprised there were so few papers available in this important field. One of the issues seems to a lack of universal methods for assessing loneliness and social capital. Definitely an area for further exploration. #wellbeing #community #healthpromotion https://lnkd.in/e9emRpm3

Mental Healthcare Founder & Executive | Oxford MBA (Skoll Scholar) | Harvard MPA (John Monash Scholar)
A world where mental illness is well-treated and as brief as possible requires greater access to the best therapies available. I believe that investing in programs to make psychedelic-assisted therapy more affordable, accessible to regional Australia, and guided by improved clinical protocols is a crucial step toward achieving this vision. This was what I spent a lot of my time thinking about at Harvard Kennedy School over the past 12 months, and this is now the problem I'm focused on trying to solve through my Kenneth Myer Innovation Fellowship through the Sidney Myer Fund & The Myer Foundation. Here’s an article in the AFR about this emerging therapy space. It’s an area with its fair share of controversy, risks, and concerns. That’s why it’s crucial for all of us to collaborate and move forward at a safe and deliberate pace to establish strong foundations. I’m really enjoying reconnecting with leading clinicians in Australia and am excited about launching something early next year that can make a real impact. The next few years promise to be very exciting. https://lnkd.in/eXCfby3D

Psychological scientist working to increase engagement, motivation, and wellbeing in relationships, work and education. Teaching Program Director (Psychology) @FlindersUni
Important research. Recently we have provided access to this vital training in WELL1003 “Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of others”. Essential for Psyc students but also for all the “frontline” mental health workers: managers, team leaders, teachers, coaches, parents, peer mentors, support workers (and everyone!) Available as an elective to all students at Flinders University (including those studying Psychology). Can be taken as an elective or as part of our Graduate Certificate in Leading Mental Health and Wellbeing (Workplace and Community) or Certificate in Mental Health and Wellbeing (Workplace and Community). https://lnkd.in/g935u-pD.
Our Researchers have recently found that four in five Australian psychologists have gaps in their knowledge on dissociation and cannot accurately identify dissociation symptoms. Study lead, Swinburne's Dr Jessica L. Mackelprang, found that if clinicians are unable to recognise dissociation, the symptoms are likely to go untreated, which may negatively impact outcomes of therapy. https://lnkd.in/gQrAnir7 October 30, 2023 Our Circles of Care: An Inside View By Rehema Kutua, M.D. People who know me well, know that I have conflicted feelings about my profession. As a black woman and a doctor, I am both aware of how important my work is and how powerful it is for patients to see someone like me in this position. However, as a sensitive person, it is hard to know that I am part of a broken national healthcare system and feel powerless to change things. Taken all together, it makes me wonder what keeps me here doing this work? It’s not the prestige of the profession nor is it the compensation (part time community pediatricians like me do not make the big bucks!). But rather, it’s the fact that I have a front row seat to the best and worst that the human experience has to offer. This gives me, for better or worse, a connection with that mysterious thread that connects all things, or what I call the Divine. These moments in which time slows down, and I feel deeply connected to the person in front of me, are what I now refer to as “thin places in medicine.” “Thin places,” a term I did not come up with, are what some would define as moments “where heaven touches earth.” For me, these “thin places” represent times when I feel at one with the source of all meaning. This reality sustains and uplifts me when things get hard and helps make my work meaningful.?

Last week, Black Men's Health Clinic (BMHC) was represented at the Black Men's Brain Health Conference in Las Vegas for Super Bowl Week, where BMHC board president, Dr. Larry Wallace Jr., Ph.D., spoke from an organizational perspective on community engagement. BMHC sat on a diverse panel called "Working with Community Partners" at the event. The panel was moderated by Lisa Barnes, Ph.D., of Rush University, and other panel participants were Harry Evans of Heal Black Men, José Melendrez, Executive Director of Community Partnerships of the University of North Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Public Health, and Jason Flatt, Ph.D., MPH from the Nevada Minority Health and Equity Coalition. Questions were addressed from the audience and there was notable dialogue amongst the panelists. BMHC Board President Wallace made several compelling statements, but there is one we would like to point out in this article. Dr. Larry Wallace Jr. said, "It is important that we make sure we don't go "cookie cutter" when we are working to engage the community. We need to think about our target audience, their comfortability, and understand the people we serve well enough to create pockets of safe spaces from one neighborhood to another." He went on further to express that fundamentally, we need to take the time to relate to the people we serve and show them we care. Simply because people don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. When we ask our youth to tackle complex problems in health equity - like how they would leverage nutrition to decrease chronic disease - it takes more than academic knowledge for them to develop human-centric solutions. By combining social emotional skills - communication, empathy, conflict resolution, etc - they are able to fully define the issue and lean into collaboration. Further, complex problems require the expertise and insights of many. Through interweaving these professional collaborations, our students - who have varied strengths, passions, and visions of career paths - are able to see themselves as part of the solution. Because when young people feel a deep sense of purpose and belonging, they can transform our world. #healthequity #CASEL #SEL #complexproblems #socialinnovation Special thanks to our programmatic collaborators and contributors: Villa Maria College, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, The Jacobs Institute, Seneca-Babcock Community Association, Inc., Jessica Kruger University at Buffalo's School of Public Health and Health Professions, Buffalo Museum of Science, Francesca Mesiah Kaleida Health, Buffalo General Medical Center, Jalen Law, Aitina Fareed-Cooke, Apostrophe Solution, Buffalo Center for Health Equity, Mental Health Advocates of WNY, Seneca One Generously supported by: Brady Corporation, Cullen Foundation, The Western New York Foundation, Aitina Fareed-Cooke @getfokusdproductions
