Today marks the beginning of Transgender Awareness Week (November 13–19). Join us in celebrating, uplifting, and advocating for the transgender community. During this week, we're highlighting the importance of using correct pronouns and respecting gender identities in academic and professional settings. Small actions can make a big difference in creating welcoming environments, especially in STEM. By consistently using correct pronouns and respecting gender identities yourself, you can encourage others to do the same.

Why does this belong on LinkedIn? Trans people are your coworkers — you may not know that they're trans because many don't feel safe being out. That's why this matters. Transgender people experience disproportionately high levels of homicide and assault.?Although the FBI reports that violent crime declined 1.7% overall from 2021 to 2022, hate crimes against trans people rose 33%. The FBI's latest report showed another 3% decrease in violent crime overall from 2022 to 2023, while hate crimes against trans people rose an additional 5%. Transgender awareness week closes with the Transgender Day of Remembrance — a day to commemorate transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people who are targeted and killed for living authentically and courageously.?Trans individuals are a part of every country, every culture, and every faith tradition.?And they deserve to live without fear of being attacked (verbally or physically) for who they are. You can make a difference to your coworkers (whether they're out or not) in several ways: ?? Share your pronouns (if you feel safe enough). ?? Read and share stories of trans people doing cool things in your industry. ?? Read and share books by trans authors. ?? Push back on hateful rhetoric. ?? Seek out trans people and get to know them. (This is probably the most impactful one on the list. It's hard to hate up close, so when you can share a personal story of a trans friend with someone who is anti-trans, it will make a difference.)

Today on Transgender Day of Remembrance during Transgender Awareness Week,?we reflect not only on lives lost to hate and violence but on the resilience and strength of the transgender community.??? The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, is an important step, but it reminds us that laws alone cannot guarantee safety, dignity, or equality. We must continue to advocate for policies that truly reflect the lived experiences of transgender individuals and fight for a society that values and respects them. As we remember those we've lost, let’s also commit to uplifting the voices of the living—amplifying their stories, listening to their needs, and ensuring that their rights go beyond legislation to be felt in every aspect of their lives. Together, let’s create a world that is inclusive, safe, and affirming for everyone. ????????? #TransDayOfRemembrance #TransgenderAwarenessWeek #EndTransphobia #InclusionForAll #TransRightsAreHumanRights #TransgenderAwarenessWeek SStraight Circles SStraight Circles Foundation

Learning to be a manager has been one of the most challenging things that I've ever experienced. That being said how to be an openly transgender leader in tech spaces, has been both incredibly rewarding and heartbreakingly difficult, depending on the moment/day/year. While so many are advocating for the end of DEB/DEI programs in tech, at the same time the future of so many trans individuals is both terrifying and unclear, so many of us are struggling to figure out what comes next. I will continue to lead with empathy, compassion, and visibility. I've had a few folks reach out to ask "what can I do/what do you need?". If you hear someone use incorrect pronouns for someone (especially when they aren't in the room), maybe think about correcting them. If you hear someone saying something harmful about the LGBTQIA+ community in your workplace, disrupt/change the conversation. Lead with kindness, be open to feedback on how you can improve your inclusive language, find resources and learn how to support those on your team, in your org, and in your life.
