“On the rocks, with a twist.” There’s a story in the book, “Pappyland” of Preston Van Winkle, the grandson of the legendary Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, ordering a pour of Van Winkle bourbon at a bar in New York that specialized in high-end bourbon. The bartender, having no idea who he was, told Preston he didn’t feel right serving him a bourbon of that caliber that was mixed with impurities like ice and lime juice. And for the record, there are MANY people who would side with the bartender in this case. Preston, knowing that the bartender had no idea who he was, waited for a moment before informing him that his father and grandfather enjoyed their Van Winke bourbon that way, and that must be ok since they were the ones making it. At that point, he introduced himself as Preston Van Winkle. Needless to say, the bartender was thrown back on his heels…his assumptions shattered. This is a funny story, and probably more interesting if you have spent any time on the history of American whiskey. My brain naturally tries to connect stories like these into deeper, underlying issues that we face on a daily basis. As human beings, we are almost hardwired to create heuristics for ourselves that help us to understand the complexities of the world around us. But, while these mental shortcuts are very helpful, they can also be rife with blind spots or become obsolete without us realizing it. Daniel Kahnmann discussed this in the book “Thinking Fast and Slow”. He talked about how these heuristics can lead us to overconfidence or to anchor on irrelevant information. In this case, the bartender was anchored on the idea that Van Winkle bourbon should only be consumed neat (no ice, no lime, no nothing). We are all seeing shifts in our industries that require us to think about things differently. In the world of employee benefits, we are seeing self-funded health plans move further down market and being adopted by more small/midsizsed businesses. This is a massive shift from where the industry was even 5 years ago. As healthcare costs continue to rise, self-funded health plans represent a major opportunity for businesses to get their health plan spend under control because they now have the transparency and tools to impact the thing that makes up 70-75% of costs: their claims. This requires a mindset shift for employers, and a willingness to lean in to a concept that may seem foreign or may not have been a fit a few years ago and look at it with a fresh set of eyes. Even if you’re not a bourbon connoisseur, I highly recommend Pappyland as a read. It’s a story of a family owned business that teetered on the edge of extinction for decades before rising to become the premier name in American Whiskey. NOPE... that's what you expect. But if you are late? Lost luggage ?? Or the wifi is down ???? You are telling the world?? Employees do the same with #benefits They only tell you about the NEGATIVE... Imagine if your #healthplan was designed so employees said "WOW... thank you... this is the BEST!" This is what we reviewed yesterday and I wanted to review the FACTS #numbersdontlie Friday: Amy Lein, SPHR, SHRM-SCP from Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida told us: 4?? years = the last time they increase #employee costs ??????DPC is a HIT.. voluntary enrollment has gone from 30% to over 80% ?? Employees pay $0 when they use the DPC or go to the recommended facility for care ?? Costs (vs. the status quo) continue to DECREASE!!! Benjie Bates from Bates Hewett & Floyd told us: ??????his town of Palatka, Fl doesn't have enough primary care ?? the local hospital sees 2,500 ER visits monthly ?????? ?? employees were having to drive over an hour for care as an #adviser, he took these facts and helped his #publicsector client implement an advanced primary care location with PeopleOne Health... In less than the first quarter... they need more hours? as employees and their families are LOVING it!!
