?? Who is United Way of Northern California? ?? Whether you’ve been with us for years or are new to our community, we’d like to reintroduce ourselves. We’re United Way of Northern California—a proud part of the United Way Worldwide network with a unique focus on the North State. Since 1953, we’ve been dedicated to meeting the specific needs of our communities. Here’s a snapshot of what we do: ???Free Tax Assistance: Through our VITA program, we prepared over 800 free returns for low-to-moderate-income families last year. ???Disaster Relief: Supporting neighbors through emergencies, like the 453 households we assisted after the Park Fire this year. ???211 NorCal Helpline: A 24/7 helpline with over 90,000 calls answered, connecting people to 1,800+ programs. ???North State Equity Fund: Granting funds to grassroots organizations driving equity and social justice. ???Supporting the Unhoused: Our South Market Micro Shelter offers safe, temporary housing to help individuals regain stability. Did you know the last residential school closed in 1996? This history is hardly in the past. It's impacts continue to carry on today as the legacy weighs on all Indigenous people including the survivors, families, communities, and the memories of those lost. These schools took over 150,000 Indigenous children, many who never returned home. During this month there will be a surge of information flooding our timelines. While it is important to learn and reflect, remember to recognize the impacts of this on those who are healing ?? I believe it is time to review my paper with Patrick Bixler, Dr. Vedlitz at Texas A&M University - The Bush School of Government and Public Service, William Brown, published in early 2024. This paper presents examples of emergency situations in Texas, similar to the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl that we are currently experiencing. Houstonians are facing significant outages, and marginalized populations are more severely impacted by the resulting damages and extreme weather. In this context, the role of nonprofits in enhancing community resilience is becoming increasingly important. Grenfell Tower- what’s your legacy? We have waited a very long time for the Grenfell Tower inquiry phase 2 report, but the wait for the bereaved and survivors has been excruciating.? Grenfell is forgotten in many people’s minds, I've had multiple conversations over the last 12 months,?when stakeholders have commented 'what happened at Grenfell was extraordinary’, and that they thought 'Grenfell was finished'. We are far from finished. Grenfell is a story of complete disregard for other human life, a lack of basic humanity for our fellow mankind and those who need?us to stand up and protect them.?It's the human rights scandal of our lifetime. The right to a safe home, the rights of the children, the rights of the elderly and those most vulnerable. ? We left our most vulnerable to perish in the most appalling circumstances.?We have left generational trauma that we allowed to happen, and Grenfell Tower stands as a monolith to the failure of those we trusted to keep us safe. So let this legacy be that those working in the housing, construction and fire safety sectors do not view Grenfell as an inconvenience to trade, but as a vocational calling to build better, build safer, build quality, to protect the communities that we live in and for the generations that come after us. Not because we are being made to by regulation, but because we realise that this is the single and greatest action we can make and give to the victims and survivors.
