I used to do competitive ballroom dancing. (Picture Dancing with the Stars, but Soviet edition.) I had a great partner, my mom hand made our costumes, and we traveled all over the regional scene. I was at the top of the 9 year old game but when we immigrated, I had to stop. Logistically it wasn’t feasible to manage and financially, it simply wasn’t an option. My love for dance was never lost and that’s why I’m especially excited to partner with ‘i am DANCE’! Founder Brandon Porter is talented as he is visionary. Leveraging decades of professional stage and studio experience, Brandon sought out to revolutionize the dance competition industry. Today he empowers the next generation of dancers through mentorship, scholarship, and inclusion. Congrats to both of you! My parents were amazing too. I remember complaining about not having enough time to play with friends because I was attending music school and playing handball. But my parents protected me and kept me off the streets. My school grades suffered a bit because I often played in tournaments across Europe and had to skip classes. Some teachers took this as an opportunity to belittle me, saying I had medals but was stupid. That was the harsh reality of Soviet and post Soviet education.
