As strains on EMS services worsen, places like Clackamas County, are "turning to nurse navigation programs to address that burden." These nurse navigation programs connect callers with nurses for medical advice or to help set up an urgent healthcare appointment. Many 911 callers have medical concerns without access to reliable transportation or primary care. By connecting them with these services, they are able to help with their non-life threatening needs, while freeing up EMS to respond to the most serious situations. Incoming Truth Bomb from a Rural Nurse... Prairie Mountain Health has announced budget cuts, and their plan for rural emergency departments/hospitals is nothing short of dangerous. When an ED is closed, management intends to staff the rural hospitals with a nurse and health care aide, instead of ensuring two nurses are on duty. While this might save money in the short term, it puts patients and nurses at significant risk. The reality is this: emergencies don’t wait for budgets to balance. Even when the doors of a rural ED are closed, patients still arrive. Meanwhile, hospitals often have a full load of patients who require dedicated care. Expecting one nurse to manage an entire hospital regardless of whether emergencies come in is not only unrealistic but unsafe. Management’s proposed “solution” is to call 911 for emergency medical services when critically ill patients present at a closed ED. But in rural Manitoba, EMS response times can take 45 minutes or more. When minutes matter, delays like this can cost lives. One nurse cannot do the job of two nurses while awaiting EMS arrival, it could mean life or death for that patient. This plan disregards the safety of patients and the nurses who care for them. It leaves rural communities vulnerable and undermines the quality of care we are proud to provide. We are calling on PMH to reconsider these reckless budget cuts and put patient safety first. We also urge the public to stand with nurses by demanding that adequate staffing is maintained in rural hospitals. This is not just a staffing issue—it’s a safety issue for everyone in rural Manitoba.

When nurses say, "We are the brand ambassadors of the hospital," it’s because: ??We push beyond limits when duty calls. ??We stay up all night, sacrificing sleep for patient care. ??We treat patients like family, with compassion and dedication. ??We are the first responders in crises and the voice for the voiceless. ??We build trust between the hospital and the community. Yet, we know we’re facing: ??Exhaustion: Endless shifts with little rest. ??Underappreciation: Our efforts are often overlooked. ??Burnout: Emotional and physical tolls. ??Staff Shortages & Limited Resources: Stretching us to breaking points. ??Nurses are the backbone of healthcare How long can we carry the weight without support? It's time to support the nurses and make them more skilled and confident than ever. #nurseslife #skillednurses #softskillsfornurses #anextram #healthacare #hospitals

Freestanding ERs and the Power of Choice in Emergency Care… Imagine this: Having a late-night medical emergency is probably one of the most overlooked problems in our society. Where do you turn? In the past, your only option was the hospital ER. You know the drill - long wait times, overcrowded waiting rooms, and doctors who are stretched thin. But now, there's another choice… The freestanding ER. These facilities offer high-quality emergency care like a traditional hospital ER, but with some serious perks. Think shorter wait times, more personalized attention, and a calmer environment. All while being staffed by the same caliber of board-certified emergency physicians and nurses. As someone who's dedicated to improving emergency care, I'm thrilled to see freestanding ERs giving patients more options in their moment of need. Because let's face it… … when an emergency strikes, the last thing you want to worry about is navigating a crowded, chaotic ER. You want care that's prompt, professional, and focused on YOU. And that's exactly what freestanding ERs deliver. So next time you find yourself facing an emergency, remember… you have a choice. And that choice just might make all the difference in your care experience. Have you ever visited a freestanding ER? I'd love to hear about your experience!

NCSBN Message: Inadequate staffing levels and rising 911 call volumes are straining the emergency response systems in the Pacific Northwest. To address this burden, some cities are turning to nurse navigation programs (https://lnkd.in/gtBHecSs) . “Under the program, dispatchers can direct low-level 911 calls to a team of nurses instead of sending an ambulance. Those nurses can give callers medical advice or help them set up an urgent care or telehealth appointment.” “Unfortunately, a lot of folks don’t know of the options that are out there to get the treatment that they need without having to go to an emergency room,” said Rocco Roncarati, regional director for American Medical Response’s (AMR) operations in Southwest Washington. In 2023, AMR launched nurse navigation programs in Washington. Over the past year, patients have increasingly turned to the nurse navigation line. The nurse call center is “meant to provide those patients with the care they need while freeing up EMS resources to respond to life-threatening calls.” “According to a report from AMR evaluating the program, the nurse navigation line has saved Clark County one fire department and EMS response per day on average since the program launched. It’s also freed up the equivalent of nearly three additional hours of ambulance availability during peak times per day.” ** Mass General Brigham Reports Success in Attracting and Retaining Generation Z Staff (https://lnkd.in/g4PxmZXZ) ------------------------------------------------------------ Boston-based Mass General Brigham (MGB) has implemented strategies to attract and retain workers, specifically younger Generation Z employees. Mary Ellen Schopp, chief human resources officer for MGB, said, “Over the past year, we have implemented and expanded multiple programs and initiatives in areas attractive to Gen Z talent, as well as other generations in the workforce, including flexibility, growth and development opportunities, diversity, equity and inclusion and well-being." “Some of the initiatives include flexible work arrangements like hybrid and fully remote options for clinical and non-clinical roles.” MGB has also dedicated resources to “maintaining and improving employee mental health and well-being.” “Additionally, MGB has leveraged new technologies, such as a mobile human resources app and Workday to improve the employee experience, regardless of age. The tools are used to simplify career path onboarding, training and planning. They can also help create stronger shift scheduling flexibility for patient-facing employees.”
