So I’ve been doing student voter registration drives at area high school with the non-partisan organization, March To The Polls. The city of Carrollton is divided between Dallas, Collin, and Denton counties. As such, a student could attend the schoon and be a resident of either of those counties. A VDR for all three is needed in the classroom. I’ll be at school tomorrow and wanted to make sure we had coverage. So, on my “lunch break,” I made the 90 minute drive to Denton County to get my VDR assignment. The commute took longer than the process to become a VDR! But if I can register one kid and that kid votes, it was worth it. (one piece of advice for trying to the young people interested in voting: Find something that they care about and explain how elected officials make those decisions. I used the school board as an example and explained the qualifications to run for a position in their district. Then I explained that I am a single woman without children or a background in education (unqualified). I could run for the school board and win. And what if I think that (insert priviledge the students currently have) shouldn't exist and Im going to get my colleagues to agree with me. Is that right? Is that fair? Shouldn't you have a say-so in who makes decisions about your classroom? Then I tell them that they do have a voice and it matters. They can show up and vote.) #ForwardWithFortitude

We know that voting is a habit. Once people start voting regularly, they continue to do so. Increasing voter turnout in the short run helps establish regular voting habits in the long run. Nonprofit engagement can significantly improve turnout rates for young voters, voters of color and low-income voters. Recognizing this, cities like Oakland and Berkeley are beginning to support efforts to engage high school student voters as young as 16 and 17 years old, by enabling them to register and vote in local school board elections (https://loom.ly/tl_GnVE). And in the meantime, nonprofits can act to increase voter turnout among their clients: 1. get them registered and 2. remind them to #vote with a message that their vote matters and can make a difference. The message that “you matter” works a lot better in turning out disengaged youth voters than a policy message. What can be done in your city or region? https://loom.ly/KEHnv-k

“Foundations can do more, much more, to save democracy." Suzanne Strassberger and I are excited to share our new blog post on the role foundations can have in supporting democracy in this crucial year. We will be following up with a post on simple steps nonprofits can take to do the same in these extraordinary times. Declining voter participation threatens the very core of our democracy. Our new blog outlines alarming trends and discusses the factors that have led to a sharp decline in voting rates—particularly among nonwhite and older voters—and the barriers college students face when trying to cast their votes. But it's not all doom and gloom. Our post also offers practical steps on how foundations can help restore voter confidence. From funding education initiatives to investing in nonprofit groups, there are numerous ways we can all contribute to increasing voter turnout.

Mark Levin took this caller to SCHOOL. When a listener started suggesting we need to “all get together to put good people into…” Levin immediately interrupted. “No, no, no, no, no… let me tell you what we need to do. We need to use Article V of the Constitution and get our constitutional system back. We’ve tried to put good people in. We had a wonderful 8-year period with Ronald Reagan, and then it was #&%&!-ed away, might I say, by the Bush family.” An activist Supreme Court. Federal bureaucracies making laws that extend far outside the voter booth, and therefore, beyond accountability. Levin listed off the systemic issues facing our nation and then pivoted to the solution. “Until people start focusing on Article V of the Constitution…this is going to keep going on!” Stanton, there’s a reason nearly every conservative political commentator is an endorser of Convention of States. They’ve spent their lifetimes closely tracking politics. They’ve watched administrations come and go, congressman after congressman promise change… and then fail. After watching the same cycle repeat itself over and over, these men and women are realizing that Article V is the only solution that will truly make a lasting impact. And they’re using their megaphones to make sure every liberty-loving American knows that COS is the ONLY solution. While on Gutfeld!, Pete Hegeseth interjected, “Thankfully, there is something called Convention of States Article V in our Constitution. It’s gathering momentum. Twenty states have almost passed it… because you’re exactly right. Federalism is our only way out of this.” Meanwhile Tucker Carlson hosted Mark Meckler for a segment on how the Convention of States will limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, impose fiscal restraints, and place term limits on federal officials — the only way to bring lasting change to Washington, D.C. But ultimately, it does not matter what the talking heads think. What matters is that this is a movement of the American people. Thanks to our well-trained grassroots army, 19 states have passed the COS Resolution. It only takes 34 states to call the convention, and right now, we have our sights set on number 20. These funds will help us to roll out tried and true victory strategies like hosting capitol rally days, launching door-knocking and telephone banking campaigns, running ads to secure petition signatures in key districts, bringing in experts to provide testimony at legislative hearings, and much more.
