May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month. Fortunately and unfortunately, central nervous system tumors and cancers are extremely rare, meaning there isn't nearly as much research/testing/treatment options or post diagnosis support as there are for other cancers. My cancer, an Intramedullary Ependymoma W.H.O. Grade 2, began as mutated brain cells that found their way into my cervical spine, where they grew into a walnut sized tumor. I'm very grateful for my health and quality of life almost 8 years post surgery. When Pat was diagnosed with #prostatecancer in 2022, it came with multiple stressors. After being seen for a routine physical that was delayed due to the pandemic, his PSA levels were high, prompting his physician to recommend seeing a urologist and having a biopsy. He would soon find out that his physician passed away (stress #1), and was introduced to a new team that recommended surgery (stress #2). Then, followed radiation therapy (stress #3). With little information on the appropriate timing, and reports that spoke in medical jargon, Pat struggled to understand the information before him, eventually going through radiation therapy and short term hormonal therapy. Have you ever heard of Anaplastic Ependymoma before? Yeah me neither, until we put Bailey's UPLIFT package together. Sadly there is slim-to-none research on this specific brain tumor and there is minimal awareness as a whole. Given that researchers don't yet know what causes these tumors due to the rarity of the cancer is disappointing. Anaplastic Ependymoma is a rare, fast-growing type of brain and spinal cord cancer that originates from ependymal cells lining the ventricles of the brain and the central canal of the spinal cord. It is a kind of glioma and they rarely spread to other parts of the (CNS) Central Nervous System. (Cedars-Sinai) Given that researchers don't yet know what causes these tumors due to the rarity of the cancer is extremely disappointing. Most common in babies and toddlers under the age of 4, these malignant tumors have a 50–70% cure rate with surgery and irradiation.
