However, they often face unique challenges in accessing resources and opportunities. In San Antonio alone, there are over 1,500 Black-owned businesses contributing to our city's diversity and strength. Nationally, Black business owners account for 10% of all businesses, yet they receive less than 2% of venture capital funding. "We need more individual donors" is probably the statement we hear most often from prospective clients. And, truth be told, it drives us a little bit nuts... ?? Why? Nine times out of ten, when we dig just a little deeper, we find that the client isn't actively engaging the donors they already have AND/OR they're not spending time connecting with their community. Fundraising is a contact sport! Okay, maybe not a sport, but it does require human contact, and intentional connection! Here are a few key questions we use to help our clients evaluate how effective their current engagement strategies are, or are not: - When was the last time you had a face-to-face donor meeting? - When was the last time you presented a specific fundraising ask that included impact metrics? - How are you engaging the networks of your Board members and longtime supporters? - How often are you checking in with your existing donors to provide updates on their investments? - When was the last time you took part in active networking (i.e. organized a lunch/coffee/zoom with someone who might have interest in your work, attended a networking event where like-minded individuals are present, etc.)? If you want your organization to have abundant resources, you need to get serious about building your community of supporters. This can NOT be done passively and from a distance. Building community and creating connection requires direct, human contact, active listening and an on-going focus on creating opportunities for engagement and conversation. Long story short, more intentional connections = more money for your cause. If you weren't able to answer the questions above, it might be time for some outside support. UMB's Undivided Attention: Nonprofits and Social Enterprises You guys have been asking if we would come back, and we agree with you there is a lot more to talk about with Minority Businesses and Organizations. There have been so many barriers and resources presented since the beginning of Undivided Attention, in 2024 we plan to dig deeper. 66% of white-led organizations ended FY2022 with a surplus, as did 64% of AAPI- and Latinx-led organizations. 49% percent of Black-led organizations ended FY2022 with a surplus. Black-led organizations lead with less than their white counterparts. A 2020 report found that White-led organizations retained budgets 24% larger than those led by BIPOC leaders and unrestricted funds of groups with leaders of color were 76% smaller than those with White leaders. Our initiative, ASCEND: BLO, supports Black-led organizations in six Bay Area counties and they explore one strategy funders can use to provide the necessary flexibility to BLOs. "Unrestricted funding is a necessary starting point for all donors and philanthropists aiming to create social change through Black-led organizations." ?? the original ask for this project was to document the annual celebration for Watts of Power Foundation (lead by Dr. Peter Watts, Jr. & Dr. Didi Watts) program Village Initiative (that is working to increase the number of black male educators - 2% is the national number of black male teachers). ?? however, once i got into the research phase of my process, i discovered a parallel need was to create a piece of content that not only documented the event, but that could be leveraged to build trust with stakeholders about the effectiveness of their work. ?? as a nonprofit, their ability to show how every donation is creating an environment for these men to thrive is essential to fundraising efforts in the future. ?? since people connect more with statistics when they are attached to stories, i decided to gather narratives that capture the heart and the effectiveness of this groundbreaking organization during the event. ?? how do you think this film turned out? what resonated with you? what would you change about it? how could your business better capitalize on documenting events as pieces to engage your community? #brandstrategy #brandstrategist #personalbranding #marketing #serviceprovider #entrepreneurship #branding #blackentrepreneurship #minorityownedbusiness #community #blackownedbusiness #smallbusinessowner
