Last week, Mary Gillis (Manager, Jones Miami) and Sarah Tarbet (Senior Associate) attended the FEFPA Conference (Florida Education Facilities Planners' Association) in Palm Coast. It was a great opportunity to connect with leaders in education to hear what they are grappling with at their institutions. Some of the takeaways for the conference included: 1) Facilities planners, architects, engineers, and other AEC professionals were very welcoming to us as #FEFPA first timers. 2) We got the sense that both presenters and attendees had an immense pride of place and a commitment to both K-12 and higher education students’ experience and well-being. 3) We discussed emerging concerns among planners including workforce housing for teachers, streamlining facilities’ inventory metrics, and improving processes for space utilization analysis. (and) 4) We had a great time! In February 2023, ARB launched ‘Tomorrow’s Architects’, a public consultation on proposals for a new regulatory approach to how architects are trained and educated. The initiative focuses on reforming architectural education and training in the UK with the aim to better equip future architects with the skills required to address contemporary challenges such as sustainability, climate change, and modern construction practices. This initiative represents a key step in adapting the architecture profession to the evolving needs of society, ensuring that graduates are prepared to meet future demands while maintaining high standards of professional competency. The program is part of ARB's broader commitment to modernize architectural practice in line with new technological advancements and global trends. ARB aims to remove regulatory barriers and make their approach to quality assurance more proportionate, creating the flexibility for new routes to becoming an architect in the UK. With one of the largest K-12 practices in the country, PBK Architects is a great source for checking in on the latest trends. Building Design+Construction Media recently chatted with Dan Boggio, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, Founder & Executive Chair, and Melissa Turnbaugh, AIA, NCARB, Partner & National Education & Innovation Leader, who reported that K-12 construction is alive and well, particularly in Texas, Calif. and Fla. where there’s been an unprecedented number of school referendums. Another major trend is school boards showing much interest in evidence-based research supporting learning. Consequently, more schools are requesting outdoor learning spaces, experiential learning environments and extra-curricular arts and sports programs and facilities—all of which have been shown to enhance learning for students. “In this environment we’re in where school boards are ready to adopt research-based design,… it’s the design community’s responsibility to harvest this research and then design accordingly. HIGHER EDUCATION is in the forefront of my mind today. Last week, I created a post about Higher Ed, mainly noting that I am teaching a class, but also that Lerch Bates Inc. delivers consulting services in that space. I started thinking, and curiosity got the best of me...I wanted to see what types of Higher Ed projects we've been involved with as a team throughout the nation. Not only did I find all types of scopes within all of our disciplines, I also found history, architecture, honor & people's choice awards, merit awards, BECx, innovation, and diversity. I have been fortunate to be involved in and to have read so many articles about why saving design and technology as a curriculum subject is so important, but this one https://bit.ly/3C32kC2, written by Laura Tuck, R&D team Lead at The Washing Machine Project, really nails it. Where learning is fun, it is often infectious. Where possible, it needs to be connected to students' real-world experience. In my opinion, there is no better way of delivering careers advice, information, and inspiration than through curriculum delivery. We also need to recognise that the purpose of school is to prepare young people to step confidently into a complex and fast-changing society. The use of the word 'snobbery' in this article is, in my opinion, genius. It nails why the subject is where it is; for too long, we have suffered from academic snobbery that refuses to position hands-on, kinesthetic learning as on a par with traditional academic education. This has to change. If we want more engineers, designers, problem solvers, and innovators to help shape our future, we need to support this subject now.
