When does a lifestyle app become a mental health app? I often use a popular meditation app to slow down my million-miles-an-hour brain at bedtime. But does that make this app a mental health intervention? On behalf of Rosely Group I led a group discussion at today's Empact Ventures National HealthTech Series event in London dissecting the curious level of confusion surrounding digitally-led (and AI-powered) mental health and wellbeing offers to the public. Should such apps be able to present themselves as mental health support tools if they've not been subjected to any form of review or regulatory approval? Are they ethically sound? You can't introduce an AI intervention in - say - clinical diagnostics - without extensive proof on efficacy, safety and quality standards. Should the same be true of direct-to-consumer apps? We didn't quite land on the definitive answer. A fascinating discussion about the ethics of a largely unregulated area.

Most people drop off mental health apps within two weeks—that’s a huge missed opportunity. To fix this, we need to move beyond outdated designs and bring in fresh ideas from gaming, AI, and storytelling to make tools people actually want to use. The key is co-creating with users, personalizing experiences, and focusing on real impact, not just downloads. It's not enough to see total # of downloads.
