Filament winding is a manufacturing technique used in the composite industry for producing cylindrical or spherical structures, such as pressure vessels, pipes, and storage tanks. It involves the process of impregnating continuous strands of reinforcement materials, like fibreglass or carbon fibre, with a resin or matrix material. In this technique, the reinforcement fibres are wound around a rotating mandrel or mould, which gives the final product its desired shape. The winding process can be done either manually or by using computer-controlled machines. As the fibres are wound, the resin is cured, bonding the fibres together and creating a strong, lightweight composite structure. Filament winding offers several advantages, such as uniform distribution of materials, reduced material waste, and the ability to produce complex shapes with high structural integrity. It is widely used in various industries, including aerospace, automotive, and chemical processing, where strong, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant structures are required.
