Because it is the end of CyberSecurity Awareness Month and Halloween, I want to discuss something scary with you, Pig Butchering! No, I am not talking about murdering pigs. I am talking about the texts you randomly get that seem like they are a wrong number. Some examples I just received today: “Happy Halloween Justin. ??” “I’m going to New York on December 15th. Do you want to go with me?” “Hello you are Emily, right?” Please note, these are intentional and they are trying to get you to respond. The reason the scam is called Pig Butchering is because they try to create a relationship with you and get you to trust them. They are using trained psychologists to help them get your trust. This is like feeding the pigs in the farm to get them nice and fat. Once they have your trust, they tell you about some investment they have inside information on and try to get you to invest in it. Once you invest, they will show you that your investment is successful and try to get you to invest more. Eventually, you will try to pull out and that is when they butcher you (your relationship and trust with them is the pig in this example). When you attempt to withdraw your money, the websites may demand that you pay additional fees to do so, or you may be locked out of the account and never hear back from your new friend. They disappear with all of your money. You should NOT respond to these at all. Even if they don’t get you to invest, they are still gathering information from you with each text. They will use this information to scam you further in the future. Remember, they are using trained professionals to try and scam you. It’s really sad and has been very successful. If you suspect you are a victim of a Pig Butchering Scam, here is what you can do:? Notify your bank immediately Contact your local police department and file a police report File a complaint on the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3):?https://www.ic3.gov. Victims should also report to?[email protected]?and the Secret Service will refer your email to an appropriate field office for immediate action. How to avoid this scam: Honestly, knowledge and critical thinking are powerful. Be skeptical of any unknown calls or texts. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you do get scammed, don’t be embarrassed, just contact the authorities above and report it. On other thing you could do to keep you and your family safe, instead of fighting over politics this Holiday season, discuss pig butchering with your family. I know I have family members that think some of these texts are real and I have to let them know they are not. It also makes some good conversation laughing over some of these ridiculous texts. Now I want to hear from you: Do you know of people who have been affected by this scam? What are some of your favorite pig butchering texts you have received? ?#CyberSecurityAwarenessMonth #BewareOfScams #DigitalSafety #PigButchering

The non-obvious dangers of fighting fraud In the fight against online fraud, those who work to keep us safe face many hidden challenges. These aren't just from the scams they stop but sometimes from the scammers themselves. This job requires constantly learning about new threats, technologies, and techniques, which can be stressful, especially for those who try to teach the public about these dangers. Take, for example, @Pierogi, a well-known persona in the anti-fraud world with his YouTube channel, Scammers Payback. He shows scams as they happen, teaching viewers how to spot and avoid them. His work has helped many, but it has also made him a target. This shows us something important: fighting fraud is tough, and it can put those who do this work at risk. The stress of always having to stay one step ahead, combined with threats from scammers, can really take a toll on their mental health. Supporting people like Pierogi is crucial. They not only help keep the internet safer but also ensure that our online world remains a place we can trust. It’s important for everyone, especially those in the business world, to make sure these defenders can do their jobs without worrying about their safety or mental well-being. To stay a bit safer in our roles as fraud fighters, it's important to prioritize our security both online and offline. This includes various things but primarily being cautious about sharing personal information. Additionally, forming a supportive network with other professionals in the field can provide a collective defense against threats and harassment. Investing in personal security measures and being vigilant about our digital footprint are key steps in protecting ourselves while we continue the important work of combating fraud. Please stay safe! #FraudPrevention #CyberSecurity #ProtectTheProtectors #DigitalSafety #ScammersPayback #LetsTalkFraud
