At Options For Youth, we recognize educators as champions of creating inclusive spaces. This #PrideMonth, we're focusing on our critical role in supporting LGBTQ+ students, who often face disproportionate challenges in educational settings. As education professionals, our impact is profound: ?? GLSEN reports that supportive educators are a top school-based factor in LGBTQ+ student success ?? Inclusive curricula correlate with a 42% decrease in anti-LGBTQ+ remarks (GLSEN, 2019) ?? LGBTQ+ students with supportive staff are more likely to plan for higher education As educators at OFY, we can help shape a more inclusive future. Our LGBTQ+ students are counting on us. Let's lead by example together. ?????

?? Happy Pride Month!!??? PRIDE Month is one of my favourite times of the year. As someone that has gone through a coming out journey and having learned to really embrace who I am: this time of the year is a celebration of love, kindness and self-acceptance. However, it's really important to highlight that everyone's coming out journey is significantly different. The LGBTQ2S+ community continues to face high rates of bullying, violence and youth homelessness. ?? For members of the community, take the month to celebrate who you are and the strength that comes from it. Know that community and support can come in many forms. You are never truly alone ?? ?? For allies of the community, allyship can come in many forms: choosing to educate yourself on LGBTQ+ history, supporting local entrepreneurs and supporting small businesses, attending your company's employee resource group events, providing mentorship opportunities, and more. Make an active choice! #pridemonth

Join us tomorrow for our contribution to the CILIP 2024 Member's Fest - 'Allies and conspirators, by and for LGBTQ+ Library Staff.' This workshop will explore ways to practically stand up for others, becoming a practical ally and co-conspirator. Monday 14 October 2024, 12.30pm - 1.30pm Delivered via Zoom ? With the increase in calls for censorship for LGBTQ+ books and continued attacks on trans members of our community, LGBTQ+ folks need allies. But we also need to make sure that we are being allies to those who are discriminated against because of other identities or characteristics. This workshop will explore way to practically stand up for others, becoming a practical ally and co-conspirator. In an era where gender-based discrimination is on the rise, particularly affecting LGBTQ+ students, it's crucial to open dialogues in our schools. Circle practice offers a powerful approach for sharing personal stories, encourages the expression of diverse opinions, and facilitates meaningful discussions on LGBTQ+ topics. It's important to create a regular schedule for these discussions, moving beyond the "heroes and holidays" approach to ensure consistent engagement with LGBTQ+ issues. Additionally, teachers as facilitators are well-trained in creating a supportive environment is key to the success of these circles. By integrating these practices, we can build more inclusive and empathetic school communities where all students feel valued and heard. This approach not only supports LGBTQ+ students but also educates the entire school community, fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding. Pride Month is a celebration of LGBTQ2+ pride, rights, and culture, so to ignore the unique ways IPV & GBV impacts these folks would be to invalidate their unique and nuanced experiences. Like many other marginalized groups, the statistics around GBV are startling and indicate that an intersectional approach needs to be taken in the work to eradicate violence within this community - starting by an honest look at the stats. Only then can we start to address why these numbers are the way they are, and what can be done to protect LGBTQ2+ folks, support LGBTQ2+ survivors, and prevent GBV in the LGBTQ2+ community!
