I applaud the transparency. We can all learn from this incident. And I'm not picking on Google in my comments. Everyone in IT has suffered a misconfiguration-related incident. These are some of the most vexing to diagnose and remediate because of the "unintended behavior" effect. This is yet another example of the idea that "config data is mission-critical," and the lack of guardrails allows these types of errors to cause chaos -- Security and ops teams need to take notice. Literally, "revenue and reputation are at risk" because of inadequate configuration data and secrets handling. From the RCA: > "?there was an inadvertent misconfiguration of the GCVE service" > "one input parameter was left blank" > "The blank input parameter led to unintended behavior" > "No customer notification was sent because the deletion was triggered due to a blank parameter."
