This was a wonderful session on practicing civility in a pluralistic work world. Thank you, Karen Stohr, Ula Ubani, and Jeffrey Moriarty! Some thoughts and insights i took away: Civility = ?? Recognizing ourselves as members of a moral community, recognizing the reciprocity of duties and privileges ?? Treating each other with basic respect ?? Accepting that others see the world differently ?? Treat others always as an end in itself, never only as a means (Kant). Empathize. ?? Listening to views we might not like. To develop civility in the workplace, we need to: ?? Acknowledge that, in the social world, "the truth" about social norms resides not within a person's mind as the result of individual reasoning (Descartes); rather, it is the result of deliberation and intersubjective validation among affected stakeholders (Hegel, Habermas) ?? We need to recognize ourselves and other members of the moral community both as judges of others and ones who are judged by others. ?? Practice rituals of civil deliberation in teams/workplace (we learn virtue by doing virtuous things - Aristotle) Civility is a social practice. ?? It is ok to have a conversation and not end in agreement/consensus. We don't need to agree on everything; we just need to agree on enough. Questions/points for reflection: ?? Do victims of incivility/abuse/harassment/discrimination/etc. have an obligation to express their grievance civilly? What if the powers that be do not respond to justified grievances that are expressed civilly? What can organizations do to promote civility? Please share any thoughts...
