?? Canada’s Triple Threat: Canada Post Strike, Port Issues & Retail Impact As we head into peak holiday shopping, Canada Post workers have issued a 72-hour notice, with a rotating strike potentially starting November 15. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has confirmed it will be in a legal strike position on Friday, while Canada Post warns that a strike will exacerbate its already dire financial situation, which includes a $490 million loss in the first half of 2024 and a cumulative $3 billion loss since 2018. Adding to the strain, port disruptions in Montreal and Vancouver compound what the Retail Council of Canada calls a “triple threat” to retailers and consumers. Together, these challenges could lead to significant delays just as demand peaks. Negotiations remain stalled over wage increases, pensions, and medical leave. Canada Post proposes an 11.5% wage increase over four years and a more flexible delivery model, while the union seeks a more substantial increase and added benefits. With these challenges in play, retailers might need to explore alternative options and communicate with customers about potential delays. At Silq, we’re keeping a close watch on these developments, offering reliable logistics solutions and live inspection services to keep your supply chain moving, even amidst disruptions. #CanadaPost #SupplyChain #HolidayShopping #Logistics #PortStrikes

The Canada Post strike is a critical reminder of the fragility of our logistics systems, especially during the peak holiday shopping season. With 55,000 postal workers striking for better wages, safety, and job security, the entire nation is feeling the impact. As deliveries halt, small businesses—especially those in rural areas—face significant challenges, risking both sales and customer trust. This disruption not only shifts consumer behavior toward in-store shopping but could also bolster private couriers and innovative delivery solutions. Retailers must rethink their logistics strategies quickly to adapt to this evolving landscape. With the government mediating, every day counts. Consumers and businesses alike need to prepare for delays and explore alternative options. The ripple effects of this strike emphasize the importance of adaptability in our ever-changing economic environment. Let's support our local businesses through these trying times!

With a potential Canadian Union of Postal Workers strike looming tomorrow, we urge the federal government to take action. A Canada Post / Postes Canada strike would significantly impact local businesses, already reeling from labour stoppages in rail and port operations, particularly as we enter the holiday season. ? Local business especially small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) rely on Canada Post for affordable and timely deliveries of goods. During the last Canada Post strike in 2018, SMEs in #Manitoba reported a range of difficulties from delayed invoices to increased operating costs. Another disruption would place further financial strain on businesses who continue to experience recovery challenges. ? The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce strongly urges all parties to reach a resolution and call upon government leaders to explore measures to protect our economy.

We have experts in place supporting us on the front lines during the Canadian Postal Workers Labor Strike. So grateful for Alison's expertise and support... << Alison Layfield,?Director of Product Development?at?ePost?and an?Ontario based cross-border logistics expert has indicated, “The Canada Post strike underscores the challenges businesses face in managing logistics during peak seasons. While alternative carriers have grown since 2018, today’s higher shipping volumes mean even private networks risk bottlenecks. Larger companies may have contingency plans, but smaller businesses and rural consumers remain especially vulnerable without affordable delivery options. This strike is a clear reminder of the need for flexibility and resilience in supply chains as we enter the critical holiday shopping period.” >> - Supply Chain Matters 11/19/24 https://lnkd.in/eHveE-tg

Canada Post Strike Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) said that its board has given a 72-hours strike notice for rural and urban mail carrier bargaining units. Despite ongoing talks, parties remain divided on wage increases, pensions and medical leave benefits. Canada Post said that it lost $490 million in the first half of 2024, with a net loss of $3 billion since 2018 - lower volumes of transaction mail, higher delivery costs and a spike in competition from the post-pandemic surge in parcel delivery services. The Crown corporation has proposed annual wage increases of 11.5% and said it wants a more flexible and affordable delivery model, which includes parcel service seven days a week. CUPW hasn't officially set a strike date yet - we'll continue to monitor this story and report back as updates become available. #initforthelonghaul #nueralogistics #supplychainsimplified #freeyourfreight #shipnuera

At 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday, 55,000 postal workers across Canada initiated a strike after a year of stalled negotiations with Canada Post. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) calls it a last-resort move to address ongoing issues affecting postal workers. Canada Post has suspended all mail and parcel deliveries and closed select post offices. This strike, coinciding with the peak holiday shipping season, is set to significantly impact Canadian businesses and consumers, with delays expected to persist even after operations resume. CUPW is advocating for better wages, improved working conditions, and expanded public postal services. Canada Post’s current offer of an 11.5% wage increase over four years has not been enough to resolve the dispute. Federal mediators are assisting both parties in finding a solution. Meanwhile, Purolator, a subsidiary of Canada Post, will not handle packages during the strike, according to Teamsters Canada. ?? ?? Well folks, it's official. ?? As of earlier today, November 15th, 2024, Canada Post workers officially went on strike! ?? ?? An agreement has not been reached between the Canada Post workers and their employer. Both parties are still negotiating. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says approximately 55,000 workers in its urban, rural, and suburban mail carrier bargaining units are striking claiming little progress has been made in the bargaining process. Negotiations began between Canada Post and CUPW on November 15th, 2023 without coming to a mutually agreeable solution (yet). ?? For individuals heading up supply chain, logistics, parcel operations, and customer experience for their respective brands, this will impact all postal shipments going from U.S. shippers to Canadian recipients. ?? Asendia has been keeping customers updated with all Canada Post strike news alerts and prepping customers for the potential strike. Additionally, our Canadian delivery network (e-PAQ Select Canada Direct Access) is still moving parcels without stoppage (including 7-day per week deliveries) as we route parcels through alternate delivery carriers for the majority of parcels going through our network. Interested in learning more? Please call, email ([email protected]), message, or text. Additionally, I've attached links in the comments to articles concerning the strike as well as our podcast episode with the head of our Canadian delivery network, Dave Mays. Sincerely, I hope we have some better news by Monday or at least early next week. #canadapost #internationalshipping #crossborder #canadapoststrike #logistics #ecommerce

Canada Post and the Postal Union Continue negotiations We are still a long way from any work disruptions. The timeline below shows it is almost 3 months at a minimum before any of this can happen, and step 1 has not even come about yet. See the steps below: Before any Strike can happen in Canada between the Postal Union and Canada Post, steps must be followed as per the Canada Labor Code: 1)?????What is known as the “Countdown” does not even begin until either side decides negotiations (which have no time limit) are going nowhere. That side would give a “Notice of Dispute” to Minister of Labor. 2)?????The Minister then has 15 days to appoint a Conciliator to assist in reaching an agreement. 3)?????The Conciliator then has 60 days (approx. 2 months) to reach an agreement unless each side sees movement and they can agree together to extend this process as long as they want. 4)?????After the Conciliation process is completed without an agreement, either side must wait 21 days until they either strike (Union side) or have a lockout (Management side). 72 hour notice must be given to the other side before this can be implemented. More to follow if we get to step 1...
