Great start. But spotting the signs is only stage one. Having the trusted relationship with the young person to be able to have the difficult conversation is the next stage. Then being in it for the long haul and being consistent is crucial. Finally knowing how to help them when they ask. Many of the young people we spoke to in our study were let down time and time again when they asked for help. We can spot the signs but we need to do some serious work around getting young people the help they need to escape their exploiters.

Did you know? The National Child Search Assistance Act of 1990 was a huge step forward in NCMEC’s mission. Now, each federal, state and local law enforcement agency must enter information about missing children younger than 18 into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center database, or NCIC. The Act also establishes state reporting requirements, eliminates waiting periods before law enforcement accepts a missing child case and requires law enforcement to maintain a close liaison with NCMEC regarding missing child cases. #40YearsOfHope

Over the past two years, community organizations, residents, local businesses, elected officials, law enforcement, and additional stakeholders have been working more closely together to overcome historically segmented efforts to reduce violent crime. In 2024, a series of symposiums bridged stakeholders’ goals and vision for a safer Kansas City. KC United for Public Safety is a community-based framework that uses Omaha, Nebraska as a model, where they have seen a 70% reduction in violent crime over the past 17 years. The framework aligns various plans into one collaborative plan to address the root causes of violence today and implement evidence-based solutions for the future.
