Nightlife Articles #40: Why Aren’t Clubs Recognised as ‘National Portfolio Organisations’ like Galleries, Museums and Theatres The time has come to question the outdated cultural hierarchy that places classical arts above contemporary ones. The contribution of clubs to our society is clear—they are hubs of creativity, diversity, and economic activity. Clubs or venues like Fabric, SubClub, Ministry of Sound, and Printworks deserve to be celebrated, protected, and funded in the same way that opera houses and theatres are. Let’s not wait until it’s too late to recognise their value. It’s time to give clubs the support they need to continue shaping the culture of tomorrow. https://buff.ly/3Uahfke

I was saddened to hear about the financial state of British arts festivals and worry the threat of some being ‘lost’ could impact Scotland negatively. A report by the British Arts Festivals Association entitled The Festivals Forward report found that last year, on average, there was a £20,000 funding gap across UK festivals. For an industry already dependant on grants, it’s a worrying trend, not least for Scottish institutions like the Edinburgh Fringe. Research and findings are all well and good, but only if they inspire action and allow for growth in our arts sector once again. Protecting our culture and inspiring future generations of creatives must always be high on our agenda as a nation.

I’m excited to have contributed to the Perform Europe, a forward-looking funding scheme for the performing arts, by carrying out the first analysis of the 42 partnerships that have been selected for the programme. What has crystalized during the scanning are “7 Strategies of Change” taken up by projects, aimed at building a more sustainable and inclusive performing arts sector across Europe: 1. The Lens of Embodied Subjectivity ?? 2. Research Focus ?? 3. Alternative Formats ? 4. Rethinking Touring Models ?? 5. Community Fostering ?? 6. Network Strengthening ?? 7. Community Empowerment ?? From this first look at the projects, a few takeaways stood out to me: ?? The local and the personal are the new global: the embodied, personal, communal, and localized experiences are taking center-stage (pun somewhat intended ??). ?? Next, there is significant focus on using the opportunity to trial new, green, more experimental, rooted production and touring models that connect more deeply with the local audiences, communities and networks. ?? Finally, there’s a strong commitment to amplifying the voices of those often left unheard. In particular, youth and marginalized communities are perceived by the projects as both those most affected and vulnerable, yet simultaneously the most capable of taking initiative, imagining solutions, and bringing about alternative social and ecological realities. For a deeper dive, I have also written an article with more detail on each of these strategies and with some examples of Perform Europe projects that the strategies. Check it out here if you're interested: https://lnkd.in/dYGFaxJd
?? Our new article is out! Curious to see how #PerformEurope projects are shaping the future of touring? ??? From slow travel to amplifying underrepresented voices, discover their innovative strategies and gain insight into how they’re leading the way in rethinking cross-border touring. ?? The 2024 recipient of the Innovative Concert of the Year Award at OPUS Klassik, Dorothee Kalbhenn, believes that the institution she works with "should behave like a good neighbour, who cares about the people around them.” The idea of her award-winning ‘Orchestra Society’ encourages communication and bringing together different groups to achieve a common result. Progress and empowerment fuels?a necessity?for collaboration?between?a wide range of players;?large?arts organisations, concert halls, opera houses, orchestras - and associations, schools,?and?refugee centers.?Dorothee Kalbhenn, who is the Program Director of the Konzerthaus Berlin and on the 2025 Classical:NEXT Jury, and musician and project designer Kian Jazdi discuss why small and large institutions should team up, listen and pay attention to each other. #classicalmusic #innovation #collaboration
