Happy Memorial Day, everyone! As we honor those who have bravely served and sacrificed for our country, it's also a perfect moment to reflect on our daily routines. Yes, habits can be incredibly beneficial—they streamline our lives, help us achieve our goals, and reduce stress. But, have you ever thought about the down side of being too habitual? On Memorial Day, when we step back to remember and reflect, it’s a good time to consider how our routines may be holding us back from truly engaging with the world around us. Think about it! When was the last time you took a spontaneous road trip or tried something out of your ordinary? Habits, while comforting, can sometimes keep us in a bubble, away from new experiences and opportunities. They can create a false sense of security and even stifle creativity. So, while I appreciate the structure habits bring me, I’ll use my day off to inspire me to break them. To honor those who’ve shown immense bravery by embracing a bit of that spirit myself. I’ll try something new, challenge my routines, and I might just find a fresh perspective waiting for me. Here’s to striking the perfect balance between cherished habits and new adventures! As we step into week two of 2025, let’s pause to embrace the significance of this day—the 9th. Numbers often carry deep spiritual, cultural, and personal meanings, weaving unexpectedly into our stories. For many, choosing a cemetery plot or a meaningful date for a ceremony reflects these connections—perhaps a holy day, a milestone, or a birth date. These moments ground us in meaning, even as life urges us to keep planning and moving forward. Today, I invite you to slow down and reflect on who you are becoming, not just what you plan. This perspective guided me on January 1st, during the final step of my festive season journey, as I visited 15 cemeteries managed by Sunshine Coast Council. At Woombye Cemetery, I discovered something remarkable in the adjacent bushland—a partially deflated gold helium balloon shaped like the number 9. At first glance, it seemed out of place. But was it? Could it have been a reminder to celebrate new beginnings? Nine is the highest single-digit number and resonates across cultures as a symbol of compassion, luck, and fulfilment. It also holds deep personal significance for me. When I became a sole parent, my family found shelter in a humble home numbered 9, where we lived for nine years. It wasn’t easy—I lost people I thought were friends, but I gained the most compassionate neighbours I’ve ever known. Until this reflection, I hadn’t fully recognised how profoundly the number 9 has shaped my journey. It reminds me of the power of gratitude, resilience, and connection—lessons I carry forward into each new day. What number holds meaning in your story? As we approach one of my favorite times of the year, I want to extend my heartfelt wishes to everyone: Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and for any special celebration I may have missed, please let me know. My intent isn’t rooted in obligation but in genuine human connection. In a world where even our leaders often promote division, I choose a different path. Despite our roots in different parts of the world—I, for example, am a first-generation Canadian of German ancestry—we share the common bond of humanity. Over the years, I’ve built brotherly relationships with people from all walks of life, and I cherish each and every one of you. Some of these connections were formed through work, others by chance. What unites them is the joy of shared experiences. Even if you don’t personally celebrate Christmas, when you wish me well, it’s an act of community and friendship that I deeply appreciate. I challenge all of us to embrace the celebrations of our friends and neighbors. Attend their gatherings, learn their traditions, and you’ll find yourself enriched by the experience. In doing so, we foster a spirit of unity that transcends differences. In a time when hate and anger are often used to divide us, let’s push back with love and understanding. Together, we can build a world—and a nation—that reflects the best of us: tolerant, welcoming, and strong in our shared humanity. Yesterday marked my 44th birthday, but today's post isn't about that milestone. It's about something far more impactful. I was fortunate to grow up with an abundance of self-confidence instilled in me from a young age. I was born on May 1st, a national holiday in Russia akin to Labor Day in the US. In my hometown of Raduzhny, my father was a prominent figure, often leading citywide events, including the grand May 1st celebrations. Each year, he would take me along, standing proudly on the tribune as the city paraded by, saluting. As a child, I would ask why the entire city celebrated, to which he would always reply, "They're celebrating your birthday, honey!" And so, we would return home to enjoy a birthday cake. This childhood experience left an indelible mark on me, instilling a deep sense of importance and self-belief. It made me feel special and taught me to believe in myself, even when times were tough. This unwavering confidence has been my anchor through life's challenges, empowering me to pursue my goals fearlessly. So, where I am now is very much due to that “they are celebrating your birthday, honey” from my childhood. Now, as a parent, I strive to impart the same sense of self-assurance to my own children. I want them to feel special, unique, and capable of conquering the world. A simple word of encouragement, a moment of admiration, or a gesture of appreciation can go a long way in nurturing their confidence. Whether it’s your own child or any other kid – never underestimate the power of boosting someone's confidence.
