Blundell School, a leading co-educational independent school, recently partnered with contractors Harris Bros and Collard, architects Inspired Partnership Ltd, and Zentia to transform its maths classrooms into a model of modern learning. The project aimed to enhance both acoustics and aesthetics, creating a learning environment that prioritizes student well-being and productivity. Zentia’s Oplia hA ceiling tiles, known for their Class A sound absorption and 85% light reflectance, were chosen to deliver optimal acoustic performance and a clean, bright finish. The installation, carried out by DB Commercial Interiors during the school holidays, ensured minimal disruption to students. With specification assistance from Zentia’s Architectural and Design team, the result is a contemporary, high-performing classroom space that supports Blundell School’s mission to foster academic success and personal growth. tsj-architekten | Elementary school, Bremen The vision for the new Elementary school is to create a place where students can feel comfortable and learn. ?? The central courtyard provides orientation and also forms a protected space reserved exclusively for primary school students. The subdivision into individual houses provides a clear, easy-to-understand structure, has a child-friendly scale and encourages identification with the "own" class house. ?? Today on Federal Hill Photography, LLC: . Eastern High School/Samuel Gompers Vocational High School at the corner of Broadway and North Ave. Built 1905 - 1906, it’s one of the city's first progressive education era schools. Progressive education stressed experiential learning over rote memorization and application of knowledge to solve real world problems. Previously, Baltimore had repurposed existing buildings or rented warehouses for education. In contrast, Eastern High School's purpose built design by Otto C. Simonson and Theodore Wells Pietsch specified large, well ventilated and lit classrooms, labs, and art studios around a central auditorium and gym. And in the aftermath of the 1904 Great Baltimore Fire, the design prioritized fire proofing and quick egress. Also, I discovered the building was to have a rooftop garden but couldn't find if it was ever installed. The building's architecture is a classical design, popular at that time. The center section, with its triangular shape below the roof, 3 large columns, and decorative dentition evoke a Roman temple. Decorative pilasters at each end frame granite slabs engraved with the names of those associated with building construction. The building is highly symmetrical, square, and evokes solidity and permanence. The building remained in use as a school until 1981. In 1986 it was converted into Ashley Apartments, but was closed in 1997 when the owners defaulted on HUD loans. The city purchased the building for $1 and it has remained unused since. . The latest project at the Elgin Math and Science Academy (EMSA) campus focused on restoring the Administration Building, a prairie-style structure dating back to 1928 and designed by John S. Van Bergen, an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright.? ? One of the most significant challenges involved adapting the building's unique shape and classroom sizes to meet EMSA's Expeditionary Learning model requirements, which demanded more square footage per student. Collaborative efforts involving the City, the school, and a historical consultant ensured the careful adaptation and restoration of the interior.? ? To create larger classrooms, a new lintel was strategically inserted in place of a former load-bearing wall, resulting in a spacious, wide opening that seamlessly combined areas with minimal disruption. New direct/indirect lighting now illuminates the ceiling, accentuating the existing architectural beams and millwork. The addition of new carpeting and furniture reflects the school's colors and complements the all-white window trim, framing captivating views of the surrounding trees and ravine. It truly feels like learning in a treehouse.? ? Passive design strategies serve as incredible solutions. Our #design for the new Almeta Crawford High School, for example, positions the school centrally on the site with an overall east-west layout to capture ideal daylight with minimal heat gain. The school itself is separated into two distinct masses, connected via an outdoor, secure courtyard. This feature from DLR Group has more on our design solution. #EducationDesign

Greetings to all connections!! This post shares some of the important dimensions and standards or guidelines for designing an optimal school. A school building generally designed with spaces like admin area, teaching area, library, auditorium, parking, and others. I have shared some of the standards below:- 1. The classroom should be designed for the following number of student places: + Nursery:- 20 to 25 students. + Primary/Higher Secondary:- 40 students. 2. The chalkboards or blackboards should be painted matte black or pale green. In the former case, the reflection factor in use should be of the order of 15 %, and in the latter, around 25–30 %. 3. The minimum clear distance between the edge of the chalkboard and the first row of desks when the chalkboard and front are in use shall be 2400 mm.? 4. The distance between the blackboard and the pupil workplaces at the back should not exceed 9000 mm. 5. The science laboratories should be designed for 24 seats. 6. An area of about 10 m2 may be provided for a room for headmistress/headmaster of the school. 7. Auditorium standard area per person or seats should be between 1.5 to 2.0 m2. 8. The width of the corridor for single loading should be a minimum 1800 mm (6 Ft.), and for double loading it should be a minimum 2400 mm (8 ft.). 9. The minimum headroom in a passage under the landing of a staircase and under the staircase shall be 2200 mm. 10. The ECS per 100 m2 should be 0.25 – 0.75 for school building. To read whole article for a comrehensive understanding of how these spaces should be designed and what all requirements are needed. NEW BLOG POST - Rooted in Learning: The Power of Biophilic Design in Schools "Biophilic design involves integrating natural elements into indoor spaces to foster a connection with the outdoors. It is based on the idea that humans have an inherent need to connect with nature, and doing so can positively impact both physical and mental health. In schools, biophilic design means incorporating natural materials, lighting, and even outdoor learning areas to create a more balanced and calming atmosphere for students." Did you know that poor classroom acoustics can directly affect student performance and well-being? Studies have shown that excessive noise levels in schools lead to lower academic achievement, higher stress, and poor attention spans. Let’s take a look at why every school needs to focus on better acoustics for its students. ???? #interiordesigners #interiordecor #commercialdesign #bouldercolorado #acousticpanels #denverdesign #wallpanels #cozyinteriors #soundproofing #sustainablearchitecture #designinnovation #healthcaredesign #acousticdesign #sustainableinteriors #officedesigntrends #ecoarchitecture #denverdesigner #commercialspaces #soundabsorption #woodpanels #noisereduction #soundcontrol #environmentallyfriendlyproducts #acoustictreatment #soundpanels #architecturalmaterials #DecorAcoustics #usdesign #designprofessionals #sustainabledesigns

Project of the month: Saint Kentigern Preschool, Remuera The project brief was to create a unique early childhood centre that would inspire children to develop confidence through a sense of community. A detailed site analysis looked at possible locations for the building within the school. Access and car parking requirements indicated the optimal location, further reinforced by the extensive bush-lined outlook on three sides. Studies looked at built form options, taking into account all the site constraints. The main drivers to the form were retaining the mature trees and bush, protecting neighbours from direct playground noise, balancing ground contours and solar access/shading. Two options were narrowed down for further development, with the final circular form being chosen for its merits in answering the brief and the site constraints. Whilst the initial form was largely driven by the site and programme, the development of the form into an architectural language looked at the history and culture of Saint Kentigern for inspiration. The circular shape of the building was inspired by early Christian architecture – the most famous being the Church of the Holy Sepulchre featuring a rotunda called the Anastasis. Furthermore, it symbolises one of the four miracles of Saint Kentigern: the ring found in the fish and the Celtic Cross of Saint Kentigern. The scale and materiality of the design also take inspiration from early Christian architecture – being single level, narrow width and harnessing natural ventilation and daylighting. The structure features exposed timber beams and ceilings along with clerestory windows to capture the ‘spirit’ of the early churches. Christian symbolism has then been carried through into the playground, where it has been split into quarters within the circular form, each quarter representing one of the four miracles of Saint Kentigern. Equally, this further reinforces the shape of the Celtic Cross formed by the shape of the building. Building on this, four dry stream beds form a cross shape in the central playground (which also become water features for children’s play), symbolising the four tributaries of the Garden of Eden that come together at the centre to present a standing cross.? #Architecturenz #Smitharchitects #Architecturedesign #Newzealand #Newzealandarchitecture #Architect #Projectofthemonth #Beautifulhumanspaces
