#mondaythoughts with One River Founder Matt Ross: We recently had a change in our leadership, and it brings me great joy to announce the promotion of Agnes Mauro to CEO of One River School. Agnes has been with the company since we opened our doors in the fall of 2012, and for the last two years she has been in the role of Chief Operating Officer. There is not an aspect of One River that Agnes has not played a significant role in helping to build or improve on, and I am grateful to have had the chance to help Agnes grow into this position, while also learning from her incredible values, work ethic and commitment to be the very best she could be every single day. She is my partner, and I have the greatest confidence in her capacity to be a galvanizing force for us over the next decade. Agnes joined One River School as an Art History major looking to have a career in the business of the arts. It didn’t take long for her to make an impact as she played a pivotal role in refining our concept as Director of our first school in Englewood, NJ, while also helping to establish the operating standards that allowed us to expand to 15 locations from 2017-2019. The Covid window followed and we found a way to become a more important resource for our members and our employees that provided critical experiences during this challenging time, and Agnes drove our daily execution with tremendous care and resolve. Now that we are about to expand and open more schools, in my role as Founder, I will continue to guide our leadership team to provide the most compelling service and experience possible for our students. We are broadening our product menu and improving our website and tools to create a more compelling experience, and I am so excited to do all I can to innovate and evolve our platform. Lastly, I wanted to share Agnes’ email with you here [email protected], so that you can personally share any thoughts you have on how we can continue to improve on our service, and perhaps you can also drop her a note to share a kind thought on this very special day, where we honor Agnes and her commitment to making One River a place that is transforming art education? #oneriverschool #transformingarteducation

A warm thank you to all the students, faculty, staff and administrators at the Culverhouse College of Business at The University of Alabama for hosting me last week. A special thank you to Keely Latopolski and Stefanie (Pickett) Buckner for organizing the visit so I could make the most of my time in Tuscaloosa. My favorite part was sitting in on classes where 2nd and 1st year students pitched business ideas, shared their perspectives on authentic leadership, and presented their personal and professional brand, informed by #CareerKey #PathAdvisor.?While data is important, individual stories make it all come alive. I was so impressed by the students' knowledge, depth of perspective and poise. It gives me hope for the future. I also learned a lot about Culverhouse's holistic wellness program, career services, academic advising programs. Like Career Key's other school and institution partners, there are a lot of people highly invested in individual student success. I’m energized to see such care and intention to constantly evolve teaching and student support in a world where how we communicate and consume content is rapidly changing. We share that desire and it just pushes me to do more. Last but not least, thank you Curt Ward from the University Supply Store course materials.?It was great to see you and this visit would not have been possible without your ideas and suggestions. I can’t wait to come back! #highered #studentsuccess #innovation #professionaldevelopment #careerservices #academicadvising #wellbeing #businesseducation #AACSB #coursematerials

?? In this week's edition of "But what does the National Center on Education and the Economy do?" I bring you....#DISTRICT #ALIGNMENT, part 2?? . Yesterday I shared some wonderings about what it means to have a district whose systems are aligned and coherent. Specifically, we considered the definitions of each AND how we might reflect candidly about our current state. Today, let's consider indicators that will help our teams better understand where we are on a spectrum of alignment and coherence. Take a watch below. Next up, then, is what do we do about it? Yeah. We do that. Imagine assembling a team of district leaders (representing all divisions/departments) AND school site leaders (representing all grade spans). Imagine that members of the team hold unique perspectives, others have some significant street cred, while others will push back in the name of making better systems. Imagine that team working together across a year to: ?? Build trust and psychological safety via a deep commitment to a research-based set of team behaviors designed to be the beginning of new team dynamics that spread from the district to school sites; ?? Engage in asset and gap analysis to reveal strengths upon which to build and gaps wherein bridging can begin; ?? Reveal misconceptions, build factual knowledge, engage jointly in thinking about their learning, and construct social dynamics that will contribute to designing a series of action steps to move forward; ?? and increase their capacity to expand their learning beyond the core group to their respective departments/divisions and sites. Imagine beginning that journey this summer. District alignment born from #discovery. District alignment built from #design. District alignment developed over time through #leadership. Districts across the nation are planning for next year, are wondering how to allocate those final funds that will be returned if not used, and are maybe even struggling to figure out why all of their current efforts aren't getting them the results they envisioned. An effort centered on district alignment could be just the thing....Grab some time via the appointment button above. Let's chat. Cory Strasser CJ Cammack Dr. Tahira A. Anchoring to core values and a shared vision for students… Student outcomes improve when the adults in the building adopt a growth mindset.
When a school is struggling, what does it take to turn it around? It’s a delicate yet radical transformation of nearly all facets of school life—from curriculum to instruction to culture. It’s even harder when a leader is new to a school, as is often the case. They must build meaningful and collaborative relationships, respect the expertise of those already in the building, and foster trust with the whole community. So how do leaders navigate this work? To find out, Edutopia contributing editor Brittany Collins, M.Ed. spoke with Kevin Sotomayor, recipient of the 2023 K–12 Dive Award for Principal of the Year and current leader of Isaac Middle School in Phoenix, Arizona. He’s dedicated his career to school transformation, not only leading several turnaround efforts but also starting a school of his own before joining IMS. Sotomayor told Edutopia how he uses data, deep listening, and direct communication to drive change as a leader. Read the full interview here:

Discussions about charter schools in Oakland are difficult enough but are made even more challenging because so many of of the schools' names start with the same two letters. I understand why so many charter schools choose names starting with "A"—Aspire, ASCEND, ARISE, AIA, etc.—it's the same marketing instinct that gives us Aardvark Laser Engraving in Oakland: just another way to juice yourself in the rankings because so many lists are sorted alphabetically. But why so many "L" names--Lodestar, Leadership, LWL, Latitude, Lighthouse... it's so easy to mix them up! Kudos to Francophone, BayTech, Downtown Charter and Yu Ming for choosing names that start with unique letters of the alphabet.

On lessons learned from academic moves. After three academic moves in seven years, a few have asked me what it is like to move, not once, but thrice. My first thought was, I still reference Clemson University as my employer from time to time, after 16+ years on the payroll, being a #ClemsonTiger is part of me. My daughter grew up in the President's Box and lived for #GameDay. We learned what it meant to be in an academic family and how a strong family responds to people in need through the way my colleagues helped me navigate becoming a single dad. My second thought was, moving isn't simple. While I was not a good fit for The University of Alabama on many levels, I have fond memories of the students and of some of my colleagues. From interacting with those students, I found a lot of inspiration. In fact, I liked Alabama students so much, that I recruited a Culverhouse College of Business student as my first #PhDStudent at Colorado. I have such a high regard for the talent of that student population. #rolltide My third thought was, you never know what you will learn at a place. My colleagues at the Fox School of Business at Temple University embraced me and made me one of them. They underscored the power of family and caring about each other. More than academic familty, Temple taught me leadership. I learned more about running a group sitting next to Munir Mandviwalla than I did my first 20 years as a Professor. I also learned more about how to focus on what matters (and to let go of what does not) from Sunil Wattal than I did from 18 years of Sunday School. Both know how to lead and when to turn the other cheek, if it means the group wins. And now, as I end my fourth week at the University of Colorado Boulder, I find myself thinking about what I will learn at the University of Colorado Boulder - Leeds School of Business. Even though, I do not know that I will learn. Why? Because each place has offered an unexpected lesson - from how academic family supports each other (#gotigers), to finding students really do make the place (#rolltide), to how to build and guide a world class program (#goowls). And that's the point of moving, to grow smarter, stronger, and better able to conduct research that impacts the world for the better. #academiclife

?? Teamwork makes the dream work ?? Laurie Ehrlich, MBA and I had a great day partnering with Sarah May Campbell and Caitlin Rettaliata of The Orr Group. We hosted Baltimore area school Development Directors for a conversation around #alumni engagement and how the enrollment, marketing and development teams can work together to bump up that engagement. I walked away with a zillion ideas on alumni engagement, yielding more $ coming into schools, longterm family loyalty, and eventual enrollment of 2nd and 3rd generation kids at school. ______________________ I help school leaders get better at what they do. The Urban Leaders Fellowship has kicked off its 2024 summer fellowship in seven regions this summer led by more than 14 incredible Regional and Policy Directors! #WeveStarted This summer marks an especially important juncture of our 14th year - the relaunching of both the Oakland and Indianapolis regions alongside launching ULF's first ever Inaugural Mentor Program. #Year14 ULF Oakland is led by Georgia Savage with Appointed/Elected Official Meredith Curry Nu?ez. Oakland has a long-standing history of impactful local policy and impact with more than 50+ alumni going on to led policy and advocacy spaces, serve as Chief of Staff, and Executive Director of local and state organizations. Notable alumni include Kyra Mungia, Forbes 30 Under 30, and Townes Bouchard-Dean of Oakland Thrive. We are excited for Oakland to dig deep in higher education policy - an unchartered arena for ULF. #TeamOakland ULF Indy is led by Danielle Drake, a committed community advocate with Appointed/Elected Official, Karrah Herring, CEIO. Since 2016, ULF Indy has been a critical career intersection for not only K-12 educators, but start-up founders, and civic leaders across the country. Indy alumni include Life Purpose Coach, Angela Choi; Haley Wing, MPA, and Andrew Pillow, who serves our country as an Air Force servicemen. #TeamIndy For the past few weeks, Oakland and Indy fellows have explored the intersection of identity, privilege, power, and class along with leadership style, policy levers, and most importantly self-actualization of the individual and collective change they wish to see in their cities, states, and country. ULF acknowledges that in order to continue to strong experiences aimed at creating more equitable communities, this also means developing our fellows at the highest level. This year we have 9 amazing alumni supporting more than 15 fellows in not only their ULF journey, but also their "next steps." #MentorshipMatters While there is so much work to do, we are excited about the work and transformation that is happening! To learn more about ULF and become a 2025 fellow or partner, please visit https://lnkd.in/gkN2mCwg. #WeAreULF #WelcomeBackIndy #WelcomeBackOakland #WelcomeMentors
