THANK YOU to the passionate and enthusiastic folks who came for Get Out The Vote postcard writing! We ran out of chairs and addresses before we ran out of postcard writing volunteers. You are so inspiring (and have such good penmanship). Eileen had to buy more stamps for the over 400 (!) postcards everyone wrote. And to generous volunteer who came totally prepared with extra postcards and stamps - big thanks!

More States Are Passing Book Banning Rules. Here’s What They Say.: Discussion about what books children should access has diminished on the national stage. But most rules pertaining to schools and libraries are made at the state and local level. https://lnkd.in/d8ydwDy4

Can we talk about reading and complicated voting material? I’m increasingly aware that many people don’t read voting texts (even intelligent native speakers). People cast votes and form opinions based on off-hand comments, or something they heard on the news. The truth is, you vote on what’s actually stated on paper. So there’s no getting around reading the printed text. I know, it’s hard and takes time... But isn’t it worth it? We each get to decide. I just know that nurturing kids who love to read, gives me more hope for the future. But we parents have to do it together. …So keep reading bedtime stories, and let your kids read to you. Explain new words that come up (you might learn something too). Reading is such a gift that just keeps on giving. So this Christmas, what about gifting books that you can enjoy together, instead of toys that get forgotten in a month or two? ?? ?? ?? #christmaspresents #readandvote #readinghabit #teachkidstoread #literacymatters #leadbyexample #useyourvoice

This initiative reminds me the three R's of sustainability: Reduce: Cut down on waste by using less and buying products with less packaging. Reuse: Find creative ways to use things again instead of throwing them away. Recycle: Transform waste materials into new products and resources.
This public library is filled with books once destined for landfill. ????

What you #see below is how I handle--#graphically--the #reporting of election results. Instead of #writing an #article on who won and who lost (with maybe three or four #photos of some of the winners or losers--as I used to do), I #show the reader ALL the winners (and this year, the losers); how their office, the area they represent, the number of votes he or she received and the percentage of total votes. I'm of the #belief that regular and non-regular #readers don't want to read an article, but only want to know and see who #won and #lost and by how much. Another reason, our paper is a weekly and we hit the streets on Thursday I've been using this #approach for a number of years. I haven't received any #complaints, from readers or within the MCJ itself (staff and management).

Today is the culmination of #BannedBooksWeek: #LetFreedomReadDay. We join the Banned Books Coalition in urging the public to support democracy by taking a stand against censorship, book bans, and other actions that restrict the flow of knowledge and information in a free society. Below are some actions you can take to defend the freedom to read year round: 1. Vote. Register to vote at vote.gov; stay informed about local elections and the issues on your ballot that may impact schools, libraries, and the freedom to read; and hold your local elected officials and candidates accountable by attending a town hall and asking about their stance on book bans. 2. Support advocacy organizations and make a pledge to join the fight. Check out https://lnkd.in/gAkWKUHU and https://lnkd.in/gQt__n5E for more information on how to support the organizations fighting for our freedom to read, and how to get involved. 3. Engage with banned books. Check out a banned book from a library to contribute to circulation data or purchase a banned book to support authors, publishers, and booksellers who are impacted by book bans. 4. Volunteer and start organizing. Ask your local librarians how to support the fight for the freedom to read. Remember that while one person can make a difference, our voices are stronger together.
