"I love a good ice breaker" said no one ever.? ? While I don't mind them, I know that the mere mention of those words brings shivers down the spines of many.? ? What can help, however, is to think of the ice breaker as an activity to build connection.? ? A bit more palatable now?? ? We recently brought the Atlas ownership team together for an offsite strategic planning retreat and one of my favorite events we did as a team was our "ice breaker", a team building event called the Group Timeline.? ? Here’s how it worked: 1. We first laid out the history of Atlas Engineering with sticky notes on a wall. 2. Then, using that same timeline each owner provided their own personal events that had a lasting impact on who they are today.? 3. Finally, we shared with the group our story along the timeline. Here’s why I loved it: 1. Not only did we get to know the new owners better, owners who were here over 25 years ago were brought closer together.?? 2. It built a foundation of connection that it made it easier later on to have tough discussions and achieve alignment when building our vision.? 3. It gave us a chance to be vulnerable with each other which strengthened our bonds and level of trust among the team. So even if been working with your team for a while now, give this a try.?

Sometimes, the weather doesn’t go as planned, but that's ok ??? Over the weekend, we hosted a reunion event at Emmanuel College - Gold Coast for 10, 20, and 30-year milestones. The weather wasn’t on our side, but that didn’t stop us from adapting on the fly. We had to pivot quickly to make the event work. I’m particularly proud of how the video came together despite the rain, capturing the moments that mattered most: people enjoying each other’s company, rain or shine. Here’s what this experience reminded me: 1?? Flexibility is everything. Plans can change in an instant, but being able to adapt quickly is what keeps projects on track. 2?? The story comes first. It’s all about capturing genuine connections and experiences. The rain wasn’t just an obstacle - it became part of the narrative, something that made that night all the more memorable! 3?? Constraints spark creativity. Shooting in less-than-ideal conditions pushed me to think outside the box. Sometimes, limitations lead to unexpected inspiration and even better results.
