Now's your last chance to catch the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) 2024, Nature of Hope, at the Nieuwe Instituut before it closes this Sunday, 13 October! Among the many talented exhibitors, ONE is pleased to present?"Soil for Well-Being," which explores the intricate physical and social relationships between soil conditions and prosperity in Tuindorp Oostzaan in Amsterdam. The project also investigates how poor soil conditions, which are prevalent in many socially challenged neighborhoods in the Netherlands, are exacerbated by climate change, imposing an unjust burden on vulnerable communities at a national scale. Nature of Hope will be on view for five more days—learn more here: https://bit.ly/iabr2024 ____ ??Jacqueline Fujikschot

Kalundborg - rethink the city valuing key principles of movement, belonging and aesthetics. The city is practising the New European Bauhaus through citizens engagement processes - nothing is defined yet, most is open for explorations, but learnings emerge and will most likely be incorporated in how the city evolves and perceives of itself. As such, Kalundborg is one of the core pilots in Desire an Irresistible Circular Society - and a pilot that hopefully will keep its pilot character of being curious to new ways of collaborating and exploring. ?? UIC Barcelona School of Architecture?and House Habitat?have signed a collaboration agreement aimed at promoting research in the development of sustainable, efficient and healthy housing. The agreement sets out the cooperation of both entities in the development and implementation of scientific research programmes and projects in bioclimatic architecture. “This agreement reinforces our commitment to research in sustainable architecture. Likewise, it offers the opportunity for #UICBarcelona students to participate in real projects that will allow them to apply their knowledge in sustainability and energy efficiency”, says Víctor Echarri, director of UIC Barcelona School of Architecture. ?? The two entities will work closely together to drive progress in building housing that respects the environment and improves the quality of life of its inhabitants. #DrivingValuesForward #ArchitectureUIC #Sustainability #HealthyHousing #BioclimaticArchitecture

Before summer I represented Cierto Estudio in a keynote on the transformation of urban space invited by RMIT University. Specifically, I found it very interesting to be able to speak with Salvador Rueda about the comparison between the Superblock model and that of Green Axes model, very commonly confused in Barcelona after the recent transformation of the streets Consell de Cent, Roquefort, Girona, Compte Borrell into green axes streets, under the name “Superilla Barcelona”. Given that Cierto Estudio was in charge of writing the Barcelona Green Axis Model - together with the City Council and collaborators - and redesigning Consell de Cent street, the conversation was of great value for us. The Superblock model generates a 3x3 grid generated by mobility streets, while the Green Axes model generates a 3x3 grid generated by green axes. The proportion of pacified urban space in the Superblock model is literally double that of the Green Axes. Regarding this comparison, an interesting debate arose between the application of both models, since the Superblocks model supposes a much higher (and necessary) positive environmental impact, while the Green Axes model seems more viable in its current implementation, since it moderates the impact on mobility in the city while still offering great urban transformation. The question is, is it enough? You can read the article here: https://lnkd.in/d42N4fvK
Barcelona's internationally renowned Superblock model is aimed at improving the sustainability and liveability of the city for people, place and planet. Earlier this year as part of Barcelona’s Architecture Weeks, RMIT Europe held an event chaired by Professor?Wendy Steele, exploring the future of Barcelona’s Superblocks, a transformative urban design agenda for public spaces that addresses the challenges of urban mobility and public participation in the context of climate change. Keynote speaker?Professor?Salvador Rueda,?an?international urban ecologist and placemaking expert,?says that “we need to change our cities quickly and urgently” due to the risks posed by pollution to both human and planetary health. Rueda has recently been appointed as a Visiting Professor by?RMIT School of Global, Urban and Social Studies,?and?RMIT University?has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rueda's foundation, the Fundacion Ecología Urbana y Territorial (FEUT). International Day of Peaceful Communication was founded by Ruben M. West in 2019. The day was created to raise awareness of the power of peaceful communication. The celebrations intend to promote peaceful communication as the norm for families and communities as well as governments, and international institutions. ?? ?? ?? Today also marks World Architecture Day. The history of architecture is the history of humankind — they are interlinked. With successive changes in architecture comes development in our culture, tradition, commerce, technology, and intellectuality. ?? ?? ?? ?? The first architecture era of renown is the Neolithic period, which was between 10000 and 2000 B.C. The structures of this era were usually rectangular, and dwellings were built independently of each other. #CulturalIntelligence #InternationalDayOfPeacefulCommunication #WorldArchitectureDay #Architecture #NeoliticPeriod #ClassicalPeriod #Romanesque #Roman #Gothic #Renaissance #NeoGothic #Modern #Postmodernism #ArtDeco #UnitedStates #Egypt #Australia #Italy #France #Europe #Greece https://lnkd.in/gbfeM_vv

Meet Aleksandra Krstikj, a research professor from Tecnológico de Monterrey School of Architecture, Art, and Design. Her specialized studies on architecture and urban design in Japan have helped her discover a different approach to address Mexico’s issues of sustainability, use of resources, and accessibility in peri-urban areas. #TecScience tells you more about her research.

Does architecture have linkages to eco-anxiety? Can it even be violent? The relevance of the question is found when the immense environmental problems of construction are compared to recent findings that show how 66% of youth worldwide reported eco-anxiety. The beauty or functionality of buildings are of little benefit, if they come with heavy collateral damage. However, there are emerging examples of architecture that not only utilise efficient ecological design solutions, but also offer room for dealing with difficult eco-emotions or communicate alternative values to consumerism. I had the privilege to present the findings of (in our understanding) the first scientific article on the connections between architecture and eco-emotions at ARCH24, the 6th International Conference on Architecture, Research, Care and Health. Co-authored with Sanna Lehtinen of Aalto University and Panu Pihkala of the University of Helsinki. To be published in a journal later this year.

Did you know that housing in Mexico is a fundamental right, enshrined in the constitution? It is therefore the responsibility of the state to ensure that every citizen has adequate and decent housing. But what exactly does “adequate” mean? Architect Tatiana Bilbao addresses this very question. She places people at the centre, integrates the social perspective into the discourse and sees the role of architecture among other things as democratising beauty. We met her and spoke to her about her work, architecture, structures in space, the symbolic dimension of light and the metropolis of Mexico City. Get to know more about her here or read the article entitled “Social Perspective” in our new magazine F_03.
