We were thrilled to once again work with Janvier Doire of Skeena Fisheries Commission and Gitanyow Fisheries Authority (gitanyow fisheries authority) to bring an advanced underwater monitoring system to the remote wilderness of the Meziadin River in British Columbia, Canada. The Pacific Community’s coastal fisheries science and database team, including colleagues from UOW and across the Pacific have just published an article in the journal Nature – Scientific Reports. The article describes the AI-backed fisheries monitoring tool they've been working on over the last 5+ years. The tool was developed to boost coastal fisheries science and management in the Pacific. The system leverages artificial intelligence to collect key data from images of coastal fish species taken during coastal fisheries monitoring programs, increasing the capacity of national authorities and local communities to manage fish stocks more efficiently. This cutting-edge approach offers real-time insights, helping people on the ground make smarter decisions about their marine resources. Fisheries data mapping - An update from the MMO Marine Planning team Paul Gilliland, MMO Head of Marine Planning, 22 May 2024 - fisheries, marine planning During 2023, a number of fisheries workshops were conducted as part of work undertaken by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and others to support thinking around marine spatial prioritisation. The objective of the workshops was to validate both the approach and the data used in fisheries mapping. Fishing representatives identified several key areas where the approach and data could be strengthened. Work is now being undertaken to identify how these key points can be addressed and implemented, with an expectation to produce new outputs in the future. Dale Rodmell, Chief Executive at the Eastern England Fish Producers Organisation, noted: "It’s essential that fishing grounds are effectively safeguarded when considering other marine users in our increasingly crowded seas, so it was very much welcome that MMO consulted with the industry towards informing the most appropriate ways to represent, interpret and use spatial fisheries data. We will continue to engage with the fishing industry to share progress and gather further feedback." In the meantime, a project commissioned by MMO to examine “the sensitivity of the under-12 metre fishing fleet to offshore wind development in the East Marine Plan areas” is being finalised. The project engaged directly with fishers through face-to-face workshops across eight ports in the East region. Representatives from the under-12 metre fishing fleet attended, helping to produce maps of their fishing grounds and highlight how they are being impacted by offshore wind developments. In line with standard practice, the final report will be published on the MMO Evidence projects register for use by any interested stakeholders. We hope this will include fishers, their representatives, and offshore wind farm developers. For marine planners, the potential application of both analyses includes feeding into the process to replace the East Marine Plan, which formally began on 22 April 2024, and informing the location of future offshore wind sites in England, noting the challenge of meeting renewable energy targets in sea areas that are already busy. via Blogger https://ift.tt/rSM3uVY May 23, 2024 at 07:30AM

Bycatch mitigation from the sky: using helicopter communication for mobulid conservation in tropical tuna fisheries - Frontiers in Marine Science: The incidental capture of non-target species (bycatch) in tuna fisheries impacts some marine vertebrates, particularly species with vulnerable life histories such as manta and devil rays (mobulids). There is broad interest in reducing mobulid bycatch in tuna purse seine fisheries, with existing efforts mainly focusing on reducing post-capture mortality rates. We explore a novel potential pre-capture mobulid bycatch avoidance strategy for the tuna purse seine fishery using communication between fishing vessels and associated spotter helicopters. We conducted a survey of tuna purse seine helicopter pilots, spotters, and fishers operating in the eastern Pacific Ocean (n = 33) to ascertain the ability of helicopter crew to detect mobulids prior to capture and communicate bycatch avoidance with vessel crew. Results indicate over half of the helicopter crew report being "always" or "sometimes" able to sight and identify mobulids and that helicopter crew regularly communicate mobulid sightings to the vessel already. Given that an average of 63% of class-6 vessel trips between 2017 to 2022 carried onboard helicopters, our results suggest that helicopter-vessel communication could be feasible and scalable for mobulid bycatch detection, enabling potential bycatch avoidance and early alerts for proper handling protocols. We also identify the potential use of helicopter detection to improve research efforts for mobulid conservation (e.g., data collection of population and habitat observations). This study is the first to investigate the utility of helicopter-vessel communication as a bycatch mitigation strategy for elasmobranchs and identifies research and management directions that could be further investigated to avoid bycatch of mobulids. https://lnkd.in/ebxTS2QT
