Keep Calm and Carry On: A New Take? A few years ago, I started participating in the 52frames photography community. It is a beautifully simple idea. Each week, a challenge or theme is set, and you submit one photo related to it. 52 weeks in a year means 52 challenges and 52 photos, hence "52frames". The only "judge" is yourself. A submission cannot be "disqualified" for not adequately meeting the challenge/theme. There are no rankings or awards, just a community of photographers who may comment, make suggestions, or offer appreciation. Each week, a panel of "pickers" chooses 52 photos from among the submissions to highlight—the 52picks. The pickers change each week, and the picks are entirely subjective and not based on specific technical or artistic criteria. This year, I am on track to complete the entire year of challenges for the first time! 47 down, 5 to go! Along the way, I have learned a lot about photographic and (digital) processing techniques. I cannot deny being pleased that two of my submissions this year, including last week's, have been featured in the 52picks list. But more important than appearing in that list is this... I was not as happy with my shot last week as I have been with some previous submissions that did not get "picked". This shows we can't always rely on our "inner critic". Often embodying the "stiff upper lip" national stereotype of Brits, this is perhaps a more optimistic and satisfying interpretation of "Keep Calm and Carry On". Keep doing your best; someone will appreciate it.

Not every client has the luxury of custom photography. And that’s okay. Despite what some creatives might say, stock photos are not the end of the world. In fact, you kind of can’t avoid using them these days. So, how then can we make sure our clients still stand out, even when they’re using the same images as their competitors? The answer is easier than you might think: just tweak the colors to align with their brand. Just like that, a generic, overused photo feels fresh and personalized.

When you're considering a photography session, whether it's for a special occasion, a personal milestone, or just because, it's natural to wonder if your partner will appreciate the results. Most partners truly cherish photographs of their loved ones because they capture a moment in time and reflect the unique beauty and personality of the person they care about. If you're having photos taken professionally, the photographer will work to ensure that you look your best, capturing you in the most flattering light and poses. This level of detail usually translates to beautiful results that not only you will love but your partner will likely admire too. Additionally, these photos can become cherished memories that you both look back on fondly. To further ensure that your partner will love the pictures, you might consider involving them in the process. This could be as simple as discussing the style and purpose of the shoot beforehand or even involving them in some of the photos. This way, the final images are more likely to resonate with both of you, making them all the more special. Call or Text for More Info: 217-621-1262

Having worked with 100s of photographers, here’s what they apply from history’s greatest to improve their brand photography – and how you can do the same. 1. Ansel Adams > He always visualized the final image before taking it. (Think ahead—plan your photos to match your brand’s story and emotions) 2. Henri Cartier-Bresson > He believed in capturing the exact moment that tells a story. (Be ready for authentic, unscripted moments that show your brand’s human side) 3. Annie Leibovitz > Her portraits stand out because she connected deeply with her subjects. (Understand your audience to create visuals that feel personal and relatable) 4. Robert Capa > Capa famously said, “If it’s not good enough, you’re not close enough.” (Immerse yourself in your brand’s world to create visuals with real impact) 5. Richard Avedon > Avedon used clean, minimal backgrounds to focus on his subjects. (Cut the noise and highlight the most important parts of your message) So, remember... Plan with purpose. Capture moments that matter. Make it feel personal. And don’t be afraid to stand out. _____ Hi, I’m Mike, partner at Go Atticus. Photography is the Art of Exclusion In a world saturated with visuals, the true art of photography lies not in what’s included, but in what’s intentionally left out. This blog post dives into the transformative concept of exclusion in photography, exploring how the deliberate act of omission shapes clarity, storytelling, and impact. By resisting the urge to capture it all, we unlock a powerful visual language that speaks through simplicity. #PhotographyTips #ArtOfExclusion #VisualStorytelling #Minimalism #Photography

The Art of Adding Value Through Photography with Mark Thomas ??? Mark and Shelly Photography. Gone are the days when photography was simply about taking a random collection of images. Today, it’s about crafting meaningful visuals that add real value. With the rise of digital platforms and the constant demand for high-quality content, photographers are now seen as storytellers and visual strategists. Each photo must convey emotion, capture attention, and serve a purpose within a broader narrative. Whether it’s for branding, marketing, or personal expression, modern photography requires an understanding of composition, context, and the audience’s needs. The true skill lies in how a photographer can elevate an image beyond the surface, transforming a moment into something that resonates, engages, and drives action.
