?????????????????? ???????? ????????? Great news! The City of Phoenix is installing protected bike lanes in my neighborhood. The intention is to give bicyclists ample room and a concrete curb to protect them from traffic. But as I was on my morning walk, I observed that dog-walkers love the lane too. Why? Because they also need ample room and to be protected by traffic. In most cases, the sidewalk (seen on the left side of the picture) doesn't cut it. The typical 5'-wide sidewalk doesn't give enough room for a person (or two), their dog, as well as the oncoming traffic of another pedestrian and their dog. These types of crowded, narrow situations is one of the few times when a sweet dog can become edgy and aggressive. As landscape architects, we need to keep this information in mind when designing dog-friendly walks and paths. Maybe it's time to start installing protected bark lanes for dog-walkers and our furry friends. I know pet-owners would appreciate it and so would our urban dogs. #landscapearchitecture #designfordogs

The Trailer Park Re-Imagined: Walled Garden Courtyards https://lnkd.in/euiBrgng The 'stigma' attaching to mobile home parks owes more to the neglect of the space between mobile homes than to the mobile home itself. Therefore transform these spaces from negatives to positives by use of walls, trees, awnings, and decks. In this way the middle class will finally and firmly embrace the trailer park.

Protected bikeways near Wrigley Field? Let's see what we can do with #BeyondTypicals in under 7 minutes... In today's not-so-Random Recreation, I zoomed into my old stomping grounds - Chicago, IL - to see if I can add some #CompleteStreets improvements to Clark Street near Wrigley Field*. I worked on a lot of these protected bikeway improvements throughout my years in Chicago, so I understand that this is an "easier-said-than-done" kind of change within the 42' curb-to-curb width. Removing an entire lane of parking near Wrigley would be a big hurdle (politically/economically/functionally/etc.), but it would make Wrigleyville much more accessible to all ages and abilities. Clark Street is also a bus route, so special designs would need to be considered at the frequent bus stops within the corridor - this kind of two-way bikeway would be a great candidate for in-lane bus stops and floating bus stop islands! *Inspired by some of John Greenfield's social media discourse I was reading the other day. Does anyone know of any useful ways to get urban dogs not to destroy planted spaces? I attended the BRAGB & BSA Residential Designers + Builders summer mixer in this lovely pedestrian space in Boston's artsy SoWa neighborhood last night. But as you can see from my photo, the planted areas act to divide the already small (narrow) public space into even smaller spaces. Though we did fine, I think this is not the best for spatial experience and social interaction. Part of it is in the layout design, but another is the unfriendly fencing surrounding the plants, which is there to keep dogs out. This article by the NRPA says that only about 60% of dog owners pick up after their dog. And it cites improvements after organizations added pet waste stations and signage. https://lnkd.in/g2_Kp8iQ Even if receptacles are added, and grassy areas removed, I imagine that many dogs peeing on the same tree could damage it in time. Here in Boston it rains, but in arid Downtown Los Angeles, this was a huge "olfactory" :) issue. #urbandogs #urbanspaces #publicspace

For me, the Peak District is characterised by its thousands of miles of dry stone walls which vary in colour depending on whether they're in an area of brown gritstone (sandstone) or light grey limestone - the limestone is my favourite for walling but the gritstones make wonderful millstones which are still used decoratively around the region. ?Whenever I visited I marvel at the number of man hours that have gone into building and maintaining these walls, not to mention the sweat, blood and sore muscles. It's as much about the social history as it is about the aesthetics. ? When I picture the Peak District it's usually of stark, open, rugged moorland, but much of the area is rolling hills of lush pasture in small fields, dotted with farmsteads, livestock and woodland, and garlanded with wobbly roads, tracks and footpaths. ? We visited this area at the weekend for a bike ride with friends along the Tissington Trail which follows the old railway line running north from Ashbourne to Hurdlow. It's a lovely route - very quiet, great views and a few good stopping off points. Who says men can't multi task? This is what I love. Project Riverside is rattling along at full pelt now. So it's time so make sure everything else is slotting into place behind it. I've been onsite at the next HMO project up in Derry City, a 6 bed, 4 bathroom one, which is well stripped out and being put back together now. Another Derry based project is in the early stages of planning, and in Coleraine, a smaller project has been agreed for sale. It's unofficially summer and the sidewalks are cooking! The chart on the right shows a comparison of surface temperatures in open, under a hard shade structure, and under a tree (live shade). The study was done in June at noon in Scottsdale, AZ. The air temperature was 94 degrees (F). Many dog walkers may not realize how hot that ground surface is when they are taking their furry friends out for a stroll. Pet paws can burn as quickly as 1 minute on 140 degree surface and in 5 minutes on a 120 degree surface. A good test: If it's too hot for your bare foot on the surface, it's too hot for your pet. Instead, try going out in the coolest part of the day with pet booties can help. Or look for indoor options such Paws48 and Mak Pack Indoor Dog Park in Phoenix. As landscape architects, we need to look at the data when designing spaces for dogs and the people who care for them. Materials matter.
