????As a scientist, few things are more fulfilling than seeing the fruits of countless days and nights of hard work shared with the world. With immense dedication, we are thrilled to announce the publication of one of the most comprehensive studies on Staphylococcus aureus using whole-genome sequencing in Ghana??! Over the past three years, we collected S. aureus isolates implicated in infections from 10 hospitals across Ghana. Using advanced genomic sequencing and bioinformatics tools, we delved into their genetic makeup to uncover critical insights. ??Our findings shed light on how this organism is evolving over time, the strategies it employs to survive in our environment, evade antibiotics, and enhance its pathogenicity. ??A particularly striking discovery was the high prevalence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), especially the ST152 clone. This strain, once predominantly methicillin-sensitive, has evolved into being predominantly MRSA . ST152 is a pandemic clone known to cause hospital outbreaks globally—a concerning development with significant implications for infection control. ??This study underscores the critical need for genomic surveillance in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Provides insights into whole genome characteristics of 159 Staphylococcus aureus from clinical sources collected across ten hospitals in Ghana. ??Highlights the predominance of ST152 methicillin-resistant clones, signaling a significant transition from ST152 MSSA to ST152 MRSA over the last decade. ??Our findings underscore the critical need for genomic surveillance using whole genome sequencing to effectively track and mitigate the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms like MRSA in Ghana. [New Publication with focus on Carrier screening] Title: Prevalence of common autosomal recessive mutation carriers in women in Southern Vietnam following the application of expanded carrier screening. ??Variant interpretation was carried out utilizing the ???????????? ???????????????? platform. ??The study recruited 338 women and conducted pre-test counseling, obtaining blood samples for ECS of 540 genes using NGS. ??63.6% of participants were found to be carriers for at least one recessive disease. The extensive variety of bacteriophages and their bacterial counterparts makes it challenging to foresee phage-bacteria dynamics due to largely unknown genetic influences. This investigation employs machine learning to forecast interactions between 51 Escherichia coli strains and 45 phage λ variants over a 37-day period. Utilizing genomic sequences and phenotypic data, the model estimates which phages infect specific bacteria and gauges infection levels among 2,295 possible interactions. The approach effectively predicted 86% of the interactions and improved accuracy in infection strength predictions by 40%. Significant mutations impacting interactions were identified, including both known and novel mutations influencing bacterial resistance. This technique could enhance the identification of genetic determinants in intricate phage-bacteria ecosystems. #Microbiology #MachineLearning
