"Culture eats Startegy for Breakfast": Rendezvous with Reality Ah, the ever-quotable “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” It sounds so profound, doesn’t it? Like a secret weapon that consultants pull out to justify the next big organizational shake-up. But when it comes to actually fixing the culture or aligning it with strategy, guess who gets handed the apron to clean up the "Rayta". 1. "HR Knows Culture" – Does It? Sure, HR is the guardian of policies, the champion of engagement surveys, and the referee in awkward workplace conflicts. Naturally, this means HR should single-handedly shape a company's entire culture, right? Meanwhile, leaders keep driving behaviours that contradict the culture they preach. They who demand innovation but squash every new idea. 2. Strategy Is a Moving Target Strategic priorities change faster than trends on social media. Culture, on the other hand, is like a stubborn teenager—it takes years to mold, and even then, it does whatever it wants. 3. Culture Problems Are Conveniently Invisible If a strategy fails, the blame is often pinned on an "unsupportive culture." It’s the perfect scapegoat because you can’t exactly point to culture in a meeting and say, “There it is, clogging the pipeline!” No one holds the same microscope to strategy when culture falls apart. 4. Everyone owns the Culture (But No One Admits It) Here’s the kicker: culture is everyone’s responsibility. Leaders shape it, employees live it, and customers experience. So, when employees feel disconnected or leadership behaviour undermines values, everyone should come forward and drive it! The Sarcastic Truth The reality is that strategy and culture don’t need to compete—they need to coexist. So the next time someone says, “Culture eats Startegy for breakfast,” remind them that culture may be the eggs, but strategy is the toast, and you need both to make a decent breakfast. And HR? They’re just trying to keep the kitchen from burning down. #culture, #Strategy #cultureeatsstrategyforbreakfast

?? Last week, Kelsey (Cunniff) Fazio, Jeremy Terman, and I had the pleasure of representing 7shifts at the 858 Partners x CREATE conference in Nashville. The conference explored the future of the restaurant industry by highlighting emerging restaurateurs, innovative technologies, and the leaders driving change. My biggest takeaway? The shift towards a people-first culture is gaining momentum in the industry. Topics like employee retention, development, compensation, and engagement—once common only in corporate settings—were key themes throughout the conference. It’s clear that investing in employees is becoming recognized as a path to profitability, and a people-first mindset will soon be the norm in restaurants, just as in other industries. I'm proud to be part of an organization that helps restaurants foster a culture of continuous improvement and team empowerment. Looking forward to continuing to support the industry’s shift towards a people-first future. What steps are you taking today to build a people-first culture with your team? #RestaurantTech #PeopleFirst #RestaurantIndustry #EmployeeEngagement #7shifts #CREATE858 #ContinuousImprovement

How we went from 1 to 25 Restaurants in 5 Years Growing a brand is one thing. ? Scaling it across the country is another ? Rapid growth tests every aspect of your business. Here’s what I learned from opening 25 locations across the UK in just 5 years ? Culture is the Backbone ? Every new location should feel like the original, ? embodying the brand’s DNA ? Standardisation Isn’t a Dirty Word ? Consistency is essential ? From your supply chain to your customer service. ? Embrace systems that allow each location to run smoothly ? And deliver on your brand promises. ? Invest in Leadership ? Empowering managers with autonomy and support will ensure they lead ? confidently, which is crucial when each location feels like its own universe. ? Expect the Unexpected ? Agility is key. Challenges come, from suppliers to customer trends ? Be prepared to pivot and embrace change rather than resist it. ? Build Community Around Each Location ? This is your unique edge. ? Localise the approach without diluting your brand’s identity. ? When people feel the space is for them, you gain loyalty. ? Celebrate Each Milestone ? Success in scaling isn’t just in the launch but in the sustained results. ? Recognise each team and location’s wins along the journey Scaling isn't just about growing bigger. Free pizza won’t keep your best employees. ?? Let’s be real. As much as we all love a good slice, it’s not enough to make your team stick around long-term. Here’s what actually works: Fair Pay ?? Your team should be paid what they’re worth. Simple as that. Growth Opportunities ?? Give them chances to level up and move up. If you don’t, someone else will. A Supportive Culture ?? People want to feel like you care. Make sure they know you’ve got their back every single day. Perks like snacks or happy hours? Cool, but they won’t cut it when it comes to keeping great talent. What will? Making people feel valued. It’s all about the long-term, not just a quick fix. Remember: Losing your best people costs WAY more than keeping them. ?? So, invest in your team today—before someone else does! ?? #Leadership #EmployeeRetention #CompanyCulture #FairPay #GrowthOpportunities #SupportYourTeam

Why are your best employees leaving? It's not what you think. If poor performers are allowed to stay, they'll burn out your top talent and drag your team down. Your top employees end up picking up the slack, get frustrated, and eventually leave. Accountability isn't just about discipline; it's about creating a culture where great work is rewarded, not overshadowed by mediocrity. Comment below: How do you hold your team accountable? OK I ADMIT IT.... We have a pool table and we do order pizza from time to time! Do we have abit of fun every now and again? ?? - Yeah! It can break up our day, injects a bit of healthy competition and we have abit of banter across our teams! Do we order in food for our team to enjoy lunch together? ?? - Yeah at Food People we're all foodies at heart and we do like to treat our team to the latest concepts and encourage them to come away from their workspaces and we get to experience different cultural elements through food! Do we provide fresh fruit snacks? ?? ?? - You bet! You'll be lucky to get your hands on the grapes! HOWEVER.... ? - This does NOT reflect our culture! ? - Pizza does NOT mask over our rewards & recognition programme and our ability to say thank you. We have frequent incentives and team rewards, alongside what we're often all here for - a competitive salary and one of the best commission structures out there! Money is important - we know that! So what do we do... ? - Tell people to rest when they are sick - We do NOT expect you to work from home when you are sick - you need to rest and recover! ? - Doctors appointments - whatever time necessary - manage your day and just get yourself there! ? - Flexibility for family commitments - all good, our families need us too! ? - Handover for Annual Leave - Use our pre-prepared hand over doc and relax, we got you covered! ? - Frequent feedback - we encourage this daily at every level and it's an important part of how our leaders manage their teams! ? - Got a suggestion or something bothering you - come talk to us, we're listening! ? - Celebrate success and support our team through the highs and the lows! Let's be realistic - recruitment can be a rollercoaster ride! ?? Positive work cultures are much more than pool tables, pizza and FIFA tournaments - it's about treating people as adults and enforcing a culture of two-way communication, accountability and trust. BUT - let's not bash employers for trying to create a nice working space.... but let's agree to get your fundamentals in place above all! ?? #hr #foodpeopleuae #wearefoodpeople #pooltables #competition #fun #pizza #impact #values #culture #people #bestpractice #leadership
