Dopamine, the brain’s so-called “feel-good” chemical, appears to play a significant role in Alzheimer’s disease, OMRF scientist Dr. Mike Beckstead found in a groundbreaking new study. ?? Read more: https://lnkd.in/gD2g_Bj4

Happy to be a part of this fabulous research with ARPAN DEY, Prof. Sudipta Maiti and the team! Aβ and ApoE are important players in bringing about Alzheimer's disease. This work shows how a brief interaction with ApoE leaves a toxic mark on Aβ oligomers. This toxic signature on Aβ can be leveraged for drug development and as a potential biomarker to detect Alzheimer's. Read our work, fresh off the press, here (beautiful graphical abstract by Arpan): https://lnkd.in/gGzVY29b

In a new article in The FASEB Journal, scientists investigated how regular moderate aerobic exercise (RMAE) helps improve ulcerative colitis and discovered that a substance called β-hydroxybutyrate (β-HB), plays a crucial role in this process. The study also reveals a new understanding of how exercise-related substances like β-HB contribute to reducing inflammation in ulcerative colitis. Read more at: https://hubs.ly/Q02nLPqH0

This one was a marathon, but has a great finish that you can now read! Started this work with Hans van Dongen (WSU) nearly 6 years ago as part of a Pacific Northwest National Laboratory internal investment. We found that the blood cell proteome shows dysregulation of insulin signaling following circadian misalignment (e.g. shift work) - along with inflammation markers. This is another in a series of studies coming from this experiment that starts to tie the short-term molecular effects of circadian misalignment with the known longer-term health impacts. Thanks to the whole team! Jon Jacobs, Nathaniel J. Merrill, Hugh D Mitchell, Ryan McClure, Justin Teeguarden, Kirsie Lundholm, Debra Skene, Shobhan Gaddameedhi (and the other authors not on LinkedIn apparently). Paywalled now at Journal of Proteome Research but let me know and I can send you an author's copy. And note the RedPenBlackPen-like abstract graphic. https://lnkd.in/gS8Mda8v

The manifestation of an immune response can result in #ocular inflammation impacting study duration, power, and the ability to meet objectives. Using immunosuppression can help mitigate inflammatory impact but may not completely quench the response. In this presentation, we explore the ethical and scientific considerations for using immunosuppression in non-clinical ocular studies and the benefits, concerns, and strategies for its use. https://okt.to/4APwz6
