Do military families really need to move so much? Moving to a new base every few years is among the most taxing requirements military families face. But is all that effort to uproot really necessary? A new report from a leading advocacy group argues it’s time to give the pace of those moves, known as permanent changes of station, a fresh look. Read the full story here ?? https://lnkd.in/eRrgVuz7

Jeopardizing Recruitment and National Security "The inadequate support for transition has immediate consequences for individual service members, such as high rates of suicide in the first year following transition. It also poses a long-term threat to the military's recruitment strategy. This is no small matter given the nation's current recruitment struggles, which have led to the smallest U.S. military force in more than 80 years. Over the last three years, the total number of service members has dropped by 64,000, down to 1,284,500, and lawmakers have blamed the reduction not on decreasing threats to national security, but on the growing difficulty of persuading young people to enlist." ???? Exercise advice for Election Eve ? : We are in the midst of review meetings The Table Financial Planning. One recurring theme is concern about the market leading up to and after Election Day.? Sherry Irwin and I have only one direct action item related to this concern:?exercise your right to vote. All of our talking (and liking and reposting all over social media) can never equal the power we have in our vote.? That opportunity has been protected by many of our clients and peers who are part of the millions of men and women who have served in our military. So get some exercise before Tuesday night:?VOTE! Second Chances for Veterans: One-third of military veterans report having an arrest history, compared to just one-fifth of non-veterans. To understand this disparity, the Veterans Justice Commission, founded by the Council on Criminal Justice, is investigating the unique risk factors that drive veterans’ justice-system involvement and offering evidence-based policy solutions to address them. Military service can lead to or exacerbate mental health issues, substance abuse disorders, traumatic brain injuries and/or homelessness, raising veterans’ risk of criminal justice system involvement. Notably, veterans with PTSD are 61 percent more likely to become justice involved, and veterans with a traumatic brain injury are 59 percent more likely. It is important for employers to be aware of these unique risk factors, and the intersectional challenges justice-impacted veterans face, so that they can better equip themselves with the tools and resources to help those who served their country transition successfully into the workplace. Political v Partisan: a lesson in semantics and a small rant As we approach the November election, it’s imperative veterans and, particularly members of The American Legion, understand the difference between the words “political” and “partisan.” The American Legion has been, is, and will continue to be a political organization. The organization and, primarily, its DC office exist solely for political purposes - to lobby Congress on behalf of its membership on matters to “pertaining to the government or the public affairs” of our country. (Political!) The American Legion is not a “firm adherent to one party, faction, or person.” (Partisan!) The organization exists to push forward legislation that benefits its members, regardless of which party may or may not support the legislation. As for politics, I’m not sure when, but as some point, being deemed “political” became a bad thing. I adamantly believe the SIV process should be streamlined for Afghan Allies. I believe immigrants should receive citizenship for serving honorably in our nations military. I believe outdated AUMFs should be repealed, so that Congress no longer usurps the voice of the American people. I believe the Coast Guard should be paid during a federal shut down. I believe the VA should continue to modernize to provide the most efficient and effective service to our veterans. All of those statements are political. None of those statements are partisan. Rather than admonishing members for being political, we should encourage them to be more political - more engaged, more loud, more concerned. Do you think officials should be held responsible for the deaths of 13 servicemembers in Kabul in 2021? GOOD. Say something about it. Do you think it’s malarkey Congress has a seemingly bottomless pit of funds for foreign nations, but not for barracks construction? GOOD. Say something about it. We need more men and women - not less - with the intestinal fortitude necessary to take a stance and stand by it. Be political. _____ ??: eating a beignet, probably arguing politics #foreignpolicy #veteransstrengtheningamerica #politics #veterans #defense #military #readingcomprehension

A very interesting view. Even if we were to move to a greater model of civilian integration with Defence, significant work would be needed to create the stores, munitions, equipment and infra to support this new concept.
'The real issue is not about conscription [...] It is about having an honest discussion with the public on the likely significant impacts that a war would have on the UK’s way of life, its functioning as a civil society and its national institutions, such as the NHS' writes Ed Arnold in the latest RUSI Commentary.

Exercise your right to vote! Tomorrow is the Presidential election - have you voted yet, or do you know where to go tomorrow, or are you wondering if you’re eligible? Here is some interesting info about voting: Military voting: Since 1986 those in military service overseas and their families have been able to vote using absentee ballots. But there have been shortfalls with the system, with people saying their ballots didn’t arrive on time, among other issues. The military voting rate is consistently lower than the civilian voting rate in the US. (Fvap .org) Voting after prison: In some states, voting rights are restored as soon as a person leaves prison. In others, the right to vote must be appealed to a judge after serving time. And still others don’t allow those who have served their time to have that right again. Understanding these rights is crucial to be an engaged citizen. Apparently 2024 has already seen a record number of veterans and military families volunteering as poll workers! #vote #america #veterans
