OIG is a proud participant in the annual CLE conference produced by the Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality & Anti-Discrimination Law. Did you miss our pre International Law Weekend webinar ‘Gender Parity at the ICJ?’ We recorded this fascinating discussion and you can watch it on the ABILA YouTube channel here: https://lnkd.in/g3tiJg-9 With: Jose Enrique Alvarez, Jessica Lynn Corsi, Priya Pillai, PhD, Judge Kimberly Prost, Milena Sterio, and Patricía Galv?o Teles. Co-sponsored by American Society of International Law’s Women in International Law Group. An overview: With all eyes on the World Court, the overrepresentation of one gender on its bench is more visible than ever. Currently, 4 of the 15 permanent ICJ judges are women. This is a historic high in the ICJ's almost 80-year history, and stands in contrast to the gender equal judiciaries achieved at other international courts. Equality on judicial benches matters. Key goals like access to justice, fairness, and the legitimacy of courts require gender-equal judicial benches. Judicial identity shapes judicial approaches to law-making. Women’s equal participation in judiciaries comprises part of the right to participation in politics and public life, essential to achieving the SDGs by 2030. Beyond the gender binary, the equality of all people requires judiciaries to be inclusive of gender diverse persons. Civil society has been calling for gender equality on the ICJ bench for years, but progress has been slow. With the next ICJ judicial elections taking place in November 2026, this webinar offered reflections on what can be done over the next two years to finally achieve a gender equal ICJ bench.

Our Managing Director, Naomi Williams, was a panellist at a thought-provoking event on transformation in the legal sector, the challenges many women continue to face and the lack of gender parity at senior levels within legal spaces. With Justice Masipa, Judge of the High Court, KZN Division and Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of South Africa as the keynote speaker and esteemed attorneys and advocates on the panel, the discussion was both enlightening and inspiring. Livingston Leandy is committed to driving positive change and fostering equality in the legal profession. #2024AdvancingWomenintheWorkplaceProgram #LegalTransformation #WomenInLaw #BreakingBarriers #AuthenticLeadership #EqualityInLaw #LivingstonLeandyInc #LegalExperts #Livingstonleandy #LLI #lawfirm #law #lawyer #SouthAfricanLaw

Important points here, particularly on the expertise, independence and international perspective / learning that equality bodies can bring to assist the Courts in their work.
