?? To get the financial perks, nurses need to commit to working in a qualifying nursing home or state agency for three years. This initiative is part of CMS's Nursing Home Staffing Campaign in response to the upcoming nursing home staffing law. By 2026, long-term care facilities will be required to have an RN on-site 24/7, a big jump from the current rule of eight hours a day, seven days a week. In the last few years, the public staff auditing process requiring many government employees—including nurses—to complete criminal record checks and adult/child abuse registry checks, ramped up. Back then, MNU President Darlene Jackson advocated for extensions to be available to ensure nurses weren’t left without valid licenses at the start of the new year—a critical step during a nursing shortage. This year, however, we’re facing a new challenge. It’s not the staff’s fault in these offices. We understand they are doing their best. Still, processing times for these checks are severely delayed. Nurses are being told to allow 6-8 weeks now, but as of November, not all September submissions were processed. On top of this, in-person pick-up services have been suspended, adding even more delays. One nurse, who planned ahead with eight weeks’ notice, asked why she should be penalized when delays are beyond her control. The response? Simply: “Allow 6-8 weeks.” It’s frustrating that in a time of critical need, these bureaucratic delays put unnecessary strain on nurses already working tirelessly on the front lines. Culture is staffing up to help expedite the mandatory checks. Because come January 1st, we want and need every nurse who is willing and able to work in our public system to be able to do. #MBNurses #HealthcareMatters #NursingShortage #IfNotNowThenWhen

Last month, New York State Nurses Association released a report examining the impact of New York’s safe staffing laws that passed in 2021. The report is the first attempt to measure the impact the law has had on staffing levels in New York’s hospitals. The study points to what frontline nurses have known all along, "unsafe staffing levels in New York’s hospitals undermine the quality of care patients receive," and calls on New York State Department of Health to take action.
