Water festivals, toys and expectations. They tend to be predictable, as these kinds of festivals usually have announcements and fixed dates. Because you would want enough people to turn up to make this a festive celebration. Whether the festival takes place in a water park, at a provincial lake, or as part of a national celebration. And with this kind of mass gathering, there are opportunities. Opportunities to engage, to have fun, but also to make money. Because there will always be markets when people gather in larger numbers, and there will be ways to capitalize on these events. But if you want this to work, sustainably [and in the medium/ long run] you must make sure you have a structure in place. If you have more than a temporary festival stand – meaning, if you want to sell some serious amounts of merchandise (or a service), go to multiple events, or do this on a regular basis, you need a plan. Starting with a decent product, a proper website that links to the right page, a call center with somebody who can speak the language(s) you intend to distribute in, the logistics that are needed for delivery as promised – and all of this of course ideally [well] before the date of the event. Once you have a plan, then you start your [social media] marketing. If the sequence and preparation are off, trust that customers will find other ways to purchase what you are promising/ offering.? Because for this kind of festival, there are likely more stands with similar products, and more virtual stands/ websites selling the products customers look for – a commoditization of water toys if you like. Standardized and interchangeable products always lead to more intense competition. And once you have disappointed your customers, they will likely not come back. Because the frustration of having to deal with the lack of response, translation hurdles, time consuming browsing, misrepresentation of product, and perhaps most annoyingly, a late delivery – it will be a lifelong reminder that you/ your brand broke a promise. Having a plan sounds logical and you’d expect we all know how to prepare, but it is still far too often that short term sellers hope for one hit wonders…. on a regular basis. #festivals #marketing #commodities #hospitality

Attention PRs, it's time to repush those festival campaigns! ???? ? The past couple of weeks have seen a flurry of festivals releasing their full line-ups - Parklife, Boardmasters, Reading & Leeds... the list goes on ? At Cedarwood, we're no stranger to a good repush to reap results for our clients. Back in September, we pulled together some data for TonerGiant.co.uk to calculate which UK festivals are the easiest, and most difficult, to secure tickets for ?? ? In November, we landed a bunch of regional coverage for a push at the time of Glastonbury's ticket release: https://lnkd.in/ebRcknm7 ? Fast forward to January and it’s safe to say that festival ticket/line-up release season is firmly upon us. To strike while the iron is hot, we pushed out the campaign once again. So what's this campaign taught us? ? ?? Think outside the box. Our client sells printer consumables but we found a niche link in that you might choose to print off your ticket before heading to the festival. A loose tie is still a tie! ??Don't be afraid to keep pushing the same campaign - there's really no such thing as milking it in PR. ??If you see potential in a campaign that didn’t initially land, give it a quick spruce up and go at it again ??A comprehensive marketing calendar is key - keep your ear to the ground (or your eye to TikTok) and update it with every release date you find, but make sure to prep your outreach in advance! https://lnkd.in/eiZJKXPC

Last week I published a post with the title ?Why do the general public perceive portable toilets as disgusting? The article was primarily aimed at interested parties, i.e. administrative and local authorities, promoters/producers of events, macro festivals, festivals and concerts, who consider that improving the safety, comfort, hygiene and health of the general public is an objective that cannot be subordinated to purely economic considerations, which is what is happening at the moment. As you can read in this new publication by Genevieve Lewis, yesterday 21 December 2023, an administrative / local authority has finally realised the problem that arises when portable toilets do not correspond to the quantities and ratios of the European standard EN-16194:2023, also published by the BRITISH STANDARD INSTITUTE. The local council has informed Glastonbury Festival organisers that it needs better crowd control, and more toilets by 2024. The UK's flagship summer festival takes place in Pilton, Somerset, and the local council is recommending more toilets. We hope that in Spain, as well as in the rest of Europe, this measure taken by the council will in turn set an example to move EN-16194:2023 from being a voluntary standard to a mandatory referenced standard in the European Union.

Rakhi is a brilliant festival. Its probably the most modern of festivals in that it bridges heritage with practicality. A festival where you affirm your alliance to your siblings with a ritual that is crafted very deliberately to cement obligations that are slowly fading away. But with this festival, these ties will continue to stay relevant. And be reimagined. I wish to offer a derivate festival of Rakhi. Brokhi. Brokhi is that festival where we meet our fellow gangsters. “Gangs” that we formed to escape institutions and the process of institutionalisation. Gangs from school. Gangs from college. From our first job. From our longest job. From when we were in the trenches during that gig in that company. From the time we were in the world of all those institutions that are not “family”. Brokhi is a form of Rakhi but you meet with the brothers and sisters you chose (or were chosen for you ) and not the ones you were born with. When you are in your 40s like I am, the filial bonds are amazing to recount. You truly see how rich you really are when you go through a few festivals. Who is really around you and how eager they are to be around you. But many of these are traditions and we submit to these traditions with a mix of volition and expectation. Seeing more volition fills you with joy. But Brokhi is all volition. All choice. And when you make that call to meet for Brokhi, you quickly learn how rich you really are in social currency. But Brokhi is not a once a year festival. Its more of a quarterly thing or H1 and H2 thing. And it isn’t a date on the calendar but if you do want one, the first Saturday of May typically works. This is usually start of financial year for many and the on-ramp to the year is approaching. A time to brace before take off. A time to reflect with your Brokhi on life in very different dimensions than your personal life. And the next good time for Brokhi is first week of December. Globally this is the start of a quiet period. As the name suggests, this time of the year you kick back with your Brokhis and make mulch wine and rum soaked raisin bread and savor esoteric tea brews. The rituals of Brokhi are simple. Meet as a group or 1:1. Groups are more fun. Recount stories. Figure out current coordinates of immediate and 2nd degree network and leave a few items as follow-ups. Repeat every 6 months. Beware though, your friendly HR may convert this to recruitment drives where they offer company wide Brokhi event to call your Brokhis to campus for games and tech talks. I’d surely attend those. But the ones outside of institutions is where the real bonds are reaffirmed. Perhaps the only “corporate bond” you should actively invest in. And its ok if you don’t like the name. I don’t either. But this was the best I could come up with. And if you look beyond the name, Brokhi is what most of us can ask for and actually have in real life! Our own (Pay)Pal mafia!!

WHAT does summer mean? Rain! No, sorry, Festivals! I think we should dive a bit deeper into this idea since street performers at an event really can enhance the atmosphere and offer lots of benefits at a reasonable price. Here are ten reasons to include them: Entertainment Value: Street performers can provide lively and diverse entertainment, which can include music, dance, juggling, magic, and more. Their presence adds to the festive atmosphere. Crowd Attraction: Performers can draw larger crowds to the festival or fair, as people are often attracted to live performances and spontaneous acts. Consider placing them in areas with less traffic in order to build a crowd. Enhanced Experience: Street performances can make the event experience more memorable for attendees by offering unexpected moments of fun, photo opportunities and direct engagement. Interactive Opportunities: Many street performers interact directly with the audience, offering participatory experiences that can be especially delightful for children and families. I gave a talk at the DC Chocolate Festival 10 days ago. For my colleagues in chocolate, here are some tips for a stress-free experience: 1?? Participate to the festival one year before you plan to speak. I know it’s tempting to want it all at once, but showing up to a festival as a ticket holder first will allow you to get a feel for the event and become familiar with the location. Festivals can be overwhelming and if you can take it one step at a time, DO IT! 2?? Once at the festival, show up to a few classes, take notes, and see what themes are covered in each session. Then ask yourself: is there a void in the topics covered? Is there a specific angle I can tackle the following year? 3?? When the next festival is announced, say 3-6 months before the next edition, send a pitch to the organizers explaining what you can bring to the table. Share an overview of qualifications and reference festivals you may have spoken at. If you have a video of a talk to share, send it as part of your pitch. 4?? If you’re approved as a speaker, congratulations! Make the organizers’ lives easier by sending a short summary of your talk, a bio, and headshot (optional) as soon as possible. Be remembered for being easy to work with. 5?? One day at least before the festival, send your slides to the organizers as a backup. Ideally, there won’t be any web links because the internet at the venue can be spotty. Be ready for Plans B and C ?? 6?? On the day of the festival, bring your laptop and come to the room at least 15 min early. This will allow you to own the space and get yours slides ready. 7?? Keep cool and go with the flow. So many things can go wrong during the event: the slides won’t load or the speaker before you went overtime. Whatever happens, stay calm ?? We all have a vision for how the event is supposed to go and we can be disappointed when we forget to share a fun fact or story. But the audience isn’t in our heads and will only judge what they see. Resist the urge to say things like “I was going to show you xx” or “I wanted to say yy.” Ultimately, the audience’s attention is the real reward. What would you add to the list? — ?? As many of us get excited about the busy festival season, news like this is very sad to witness and should not be taken lightly. Another festival succumbing to the relentless financial pressures that are causing havoc in the events industry should be a stark reminder of how fragile the sector is at present. The ripple effects of soaring operating costs highlight the urgent need for sustainable solutions. AIF CEO John Rostron says in the article, “The speed of festival casualties in 2024 shows no sign of slowing. We are witnessing the steady erosion of one of the UK’s most successful and culturally significant industries not because of a lack of demand from the public but because of unpredictable, unsustainable supply chain costs and market fluctuations. In asking for a temporary reduction in VAT related to ticket sales, we have provided Government with a considered, targeted and sensible solution, which would save this important sector. We need action now.” The loss of festivals extends beyond entertainment. These events generate significant economic activity, supporting local businesses and providing employment opportunities. Their absence means lost revenue, job losses, and diminished community spirit. The reduction of ticket VAT with the suggested 5% initiative may not be a long-term fix but it will help keep festivals afloat! Why do we go to festivals? It was something I contemplated at 4am while trying to stop a marquee from setting sail into the air during a quintessentially English late July storm. Thankfully we pinned it down, but sometimes it seems we can't get a handle on something until it's been taken away from us. Lockdown allowed us to indulge in some soul-searching about our appetite for summer festivals. A Department for Culture, Media & Sport select committee survey of 36,000 people showed that what people most missed about festivals during the pandemic was 'the atmosphere'. The atmosphere, much like that airborne marquee, is something difficult to put your finger on, but whatever it is, you do want to soak it up. So, what contributes to that ‘atmosphere’? Harry van Vliet from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences compared over 20 studies into motivations for festival-going. He distilled them into: escape, family togetherness, socialisation, and novelty. Other researchers, such as Rippen and Bos, cite realising significance, giving meaning and giving shape, and deploying, developing and maintaining competencies. As abstract and ethereal as our motivations are, at festivals we want to ram the tent peg into the ground, staking the opportunity to escape or to imagine the future. Why else would you endure discomfort, questionable cuisine and sanitation, queues and sleep deprivation? We endure little inconveniences because we have bigger thirsts.
